Two upcoming Doctor Who novels from BBC Books and Penguing will hit the shelves in May, and it’s been officially confirmed that character Belinda Chandra (played by Varada Sethu) will feature in one of these books.
On Thursday, 29th May 2025, Emily Cook’s “Fear Death by Water” and Hannah Fergesen’s “Spectral Scream” will both be available in hardcover and audiobook editions – coincidentally, this is the same month that season 15 is anticipated to debut.
The upcoming title, “Spectral Scream,” marks the debut of Belinda as a co-star alongside the Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, in a new Doctor Who novel. Fans are excitedly anticipating insights into the newest companion of the Time Lord.
A desperate psychic cry for help almost causes the TARDIS to malfunction. The Doctor and Belinda follow the source of this distress signal to a far-off planet.
In that location, they encounter a conscious, mind-reading spacecraft called Adama, along with weary settlers who trace their lineage back to the ship’s initial crew. Adama is near death, and its tormented spirits are emitting screams powerful enough to cause death to anyone nearby.
100 years ago, when Adama’s spaceship came crashing down, it carried a valuable hoard, pilfered from the oppressive Gangnax Empire – advanced tech that has the power to either bring together or obliterate entire worlds.
To ensure the survival of the bioship, The Doctor and Belinda need to navigate through distrustful settlers, ruthless bounty hunters, and relentless military personnel who are intent on repossessing their property – all before Adama’s dying moments bring about a catastrophic end for everyone.
At the San Diego Comic-Con last summer, it was revealed that the character portrayed by Sethu would be named [character name], distinct from his season 14 guest role as Mundy Flynn, a claim made by showrunner Russell T Davies later on.
As a movie connoisseur, I must say that “Fear Death by Water” promises to be an unconventional journey, transporting us to the picturesque landscape of Northumberland in the year 1838. In this adventure, we find ourselves accompanying the Fifteenth Doctor on a solo escapade. Right off the bat, he finds himself plunged headfirst into a whirlpool of deep-seated trouble.

In the story, the TARDIS forcefully lands on a ship that is sinking in water steam-filled, as shown in the synopsis. With no means of escape, the Doctor and a small group of survivors struggle for survival. Meanwhile, the brave daughter of the lighthouse keeper named Grace Darling, puts herself at risk by rowing out to save them.
Praised as a heroine, Grace finds it challenging to handle her sudden stardom. However, the Doctor suspects that there’s more to Grace’s struggle than just fame. A haunting vision witnessed during the storm at sea has left her disturbed and tormented.
A terrifying creature haunts her thoughts, causing disasters at sea and snatching the spirits of the deceased. This entity is not a figment of her imagination, but a very real presence.
The fifteenth season of Doctor Who has not been officially scheduled for release as of now, but it’s expected that the show will resume broadcasting in May 2025, continuing the narrative from the previous year’s Christmas special titled “Joy to the World”.
