For nearly three decades now, the “Ghost in the Shell” franchise has been a trailblazer in pushing the boundaries of animation, demonstrating the transformative power of anime since its debut in 1995. With Major Kusanagi being the first character brought to life in animated form by creator Masamune Shirow, the series has undergone multiple reinventions. Recently, it was announced that Science SARU (known for “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Devilman Crybaby”) is working on a new adaptation of the franchise, promising a significant announcement this summer at Anime Expo 2025. Given the profound influence “Ghost in the Shell” has had globally, this upcoming development is definitely worth keeping an eye on as we approach next month.
This year’s Anime Expo panel for “Ghost in the Shell” is set to unveil some significant developments for its advanced, cyberpunk-themed story. The event takes place on July 3rd at 5:15PM Pacific Time and, as described by the major convention, it will mark the return of the classic sci-fi anime by Shirow Masamune in 2026. Leading animation studio Science SARU will be showcasing a new project titled “THE GHOST IN THE SHELL“. The production team members, including producers, will share insights on the anime’s content and the current status of the project, as well as other updates.
Ghost In The Shell Creator Speaks
Previously this year, Masamune Shirow expressed his thoughts on the forthcoming Science SARU production of “GHOST IN THE SHELL”, which seems to most closely resemble the original source material among all anime adaptations so far. Here’s what Shirow stated:
“Regarding anime adaptations, this new version of ‘GHOST IN THE SHELL’ makes it the fourth one, following those by Oshii, Kamiyama, and Kise. However, if we separate ‘GHOST IN THE SHELL’ and Innocence, classify the S.A.C. series into Seasons 1, 2, and Solid State Society, divide ARISE into its own series along with The New Movie, and split SAC_2045 into Seasons 1 and 2, then this would be the tenth adaptation in total.
Shirow went on to say, “Given the change in production team, it’s not unreasonable to view this as a new beginning – essentially, a second edition. Since the original manga is quite vintage, I appreciate your patience regarding that aspect. Regardless, I truly hope you will find this a pleasurable visual journey once more.
Observing here, I notice Science SARU isn’t alone in crafting this fresh version of Major Kusanagi. Companies like Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G are also contributing to the project, given the expansive Ghost in the Shell anime franchise. It seems that a collective effort is being made for this new anime series, which might reveal its release date during Anime Expo’s discussion on the upcoming series next month.
