New Gremlins & Goonies Sequels Confirmed by Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Pictures has made it official: They’re working on fresh installments for two iconic ’80s series – the mischievous creatures from Gremlins and the adventurous gang from The Goonies. The studio shared this exciting news in a recent conversation with Deadline, hinting at their plans for reviving classic properties.

According to Warner Bros. Pictures Chair and CEO Pam Abdy’s announcement, there’s great enthusiasm about Amblin partnering with Chris Columbus on new chapters in the Gremlins and Goonies series. The latest news and reports suggest that these are not reboots, but rather follow-ups to the initial stories.

In 1984, the movie “Gremlins” was brought to life by Chris Columbus as its writer and Joe Dante as its director. This blend of horror and comedy quickly gained a devoted following, leading to a sequel titled “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” in 1990. Despite rumors of a third installment dating back to 2010, it never came to fruition. However, the franchise was reborn in an animated series called “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” on Max in 2023. A new season, now known as “Gremlins: The Wild Batch”, debuted in April 2025.

Despite Warner Bros. yet to reveal any specific plot points or actors for the upcoming live-action Gremlins movie, the use of terms like “new entries” and considering the history of the franchise’s development, it seems likely that this new project will build upon the existing storyline instead of rebooting the timeline.

For the fans of “The Goonies,” Warner Bros. has officially announced a sequel to the beloved 1985 adventure film. Penned by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg and helmed by Richard Donner, the original cast consisted of Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green.

Back in the early part of this year, it was revealed by Deadline that Potsy Ponciroli (of Old Henry fame) had been enlisted to script a follow-up to the initial movie. The team of Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario are set to produce through Amblin Entertainment, with Chris Columbus also reprising his role as producer. Lauren Shuler Donner has joined as executive producer. As of now, there is no word on who will direct the sequel, and plot specifics continue to be kept confidential.

In March, the main actors from the movie “The Goonies” came together at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles for an event celebrating Ke Huy Quan. Other cast members present included Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, and Josh Brolin. Notably, Quan, who portrayed the beloved character Data, has expressed interest in reprising his role if a sequel gets green-lit.

In an earlier conversation with TooFab, he expressed that it was one of the most remarkable journeys of his life. He added that he’d be thrilled to explore that character once more.

As of now, neither follow-up to the original Gremlins has set a release date, and it’s uncertain if the original cast will participate. Both sequels are currently being worked on at an early stage.
