On Monday, HBO unveiled nine new actors for their upcoming Harry Potter revival series. Among them are the troublesome families that frequently hassle Harry: the Dursleys and the Malfoys. Daniel Rigby will portray Uncle Vernon Dursley, while Bel Powley takes on the role of Aunt Petunia. Lox Pratt has been chosen to play Draco Malfoy, Harry’s school adversary, and Johnny Flynn as Draco’s dad, Lucius. Katherine Parkinson was announced to portray Molly Weasley, and Bertie Carvel will depict Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Additionally, three of Harry’s classmates were introduced: Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown.
The reimagining of the “Harry Potter” series is progressing, with a focus on the initially humorous villains. Petunia, who is Harry’s Muggle aunt due to his mother, is raised by her and her husband Vernon. These characters, often portrayed comically for amusement in the books and films, also display abusive behavior towards Harry that significantly impacts him. In contrast to their movie counterparts, Powley and Rigby are reportedly sticking closer to the source material, as they are younger – more age-appropriate according to the timeline suggested in the novels.
In this TV series, it’s not surprising that Draco is cast, given his significant role in the narrative since he’s introduced early on. However, it’s a bit unexpected to see Lucius appear so soon, as he doesn’t make an appearance until the second book. The show might just give us a brief scene of him sending Draco off to Hogwarts, or perhaps they’re planning to introduce Lucius earlier in the storyline. Regardless, Pratt and Flynn are perfect for their roles, capturing the right look and having enough similarities to portray these arrogant wizards convincingly.
Parkinson’s fiery red hair perfectly suits her role as the beloved matriarch of the Weasley family, and fans are thrilled to finally meet this character. Moreover, Parkinson’s involvement underscores the series’ dedication to portraying characters who age realistically. In the books, Lily and Petunia had their children at a young age, making them relatively young parents to Harry and Dudley. However, since Molly Weasley is sending her sixth son to Hogwarts when the story begins, it’s only natural that she’s approximately ten years older than the Dursleys.
Currently, the remake of the “Harry Potter” series is being made and is set to debut around 2026. The roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron have already been filled – Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. As for the premiere, it will take place on HBO and HBO Max, but a specific release date has not been disclosed yet. In the interim, fans can watch the original movies on HBO Max.
