As a tech enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of many promising innovations. The latest patent leak from Microsoft’s Surface hardware team has stirred a mix of nostalgia and intrigue in me.
Microsoft’s Surface team regularly submits patent applications for potential product designs, with some eventually becoming products, while others remain unseen. This week, a fresh patent from Microsoft, based in Redmond, has been made public, showcasing a hinge design that seems to be intended for a foldable flip phone-like device.
This patent provides a detailed description of the unique hinge mechanism, enabling a dual-half foldable screen on a device. One illustration in the patent resembles a smartphone with a rectangular shape, much like the Samsung Galaxy Flip or Motorola Razr.
The patent details a design for “hinged devices that have flexible displays. Consumers prefer compact devices, especially preferring thinner devices to thicker devices. As a result, many device components have to be positioned in a limited space. The present concepts provide a technical solution of a hinge assembly that occupies less device space than previous designs while satisfying hinge design parameters.”
The patent paper further discusses the historical fragility of foldable displays and proposes a design that could potentially address these durability concerns.
2023 saw the submission of a patent, which, while not disclosing extensive details, does verify that Microsoft was exploring the concept of foldable screen mobile devices at one point in time. It’s worth noting that Microsoft has abandoned any plans to launch a foldable phone, making this patent possibly an artifact from Surface’s past innovation endeavors.
From what I’ve gathered, it seemed like Microsoft was considering the launch of two distinct types of smartphones: one foldable, reminiscent of the Galaxy Fold, and another traditional, flat-screen model. However, around mid-2023, both projects were reportedly scrapped. For now, it appears that Microsoft has no immediate intentions of entering the mobile phone market again.
It’s possible that Microsoft could utilize its hinge patent designs for other product shapes in the future, but it’s highly unlikely we’ll see a Surface folding smartphone anytime soon. The company seems to have disbanded its Android OS team and there’s no visible attempt to revive Windows for mobile devices at this point.
Still, one can dream.
