As a self-proclaimed horror enthusiast with a soft spot for anything supernatural or gory, I’ve had my fair share of chilling experiences, but nothing quite prepares you for the sheer excitement that comes with the onslaught of new horror movies hitting our screens this month!
2024 has been an exceptional year for thriller and horror films, with some truly chilling releases. M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” offered a surprising twist on the Eras Tour, while Nicolas Cage and James McAvoy delivered unsettling performances in “Longlegs” and “Speak No Evil“. Sydney Sweeney’s divine portrayal graced the screens in “Immaculate“, Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” finally saw the light, and studios unearthed new prequels like “A Quiet Place: Day One“, “The First Omen“, “The Strangers: Chapter 1“, and even a prequel to “Rosemary’s Baby” titled “Apartment 7A“. And these are just the horror movies you might have come across.

Don’t Move
In the realm of films crafted by Sam Raimi, renowned for his works like the Evil Dead series and Drag Me to Hell, I found myself immersed in a heart-pounding thriller titled Don’t Move. Kelsey Asbille, famously known for her role in Yellowstone, plays a character who, in a chilling turn of events, is injected with a paralytic drug by a menacing figure (Finn Wittrock from American Horror Story) in a desolate forest. As my body starts to shut down, the struggle for survival kicks into high gear.
In the movie “The Exorcism,” which doesn’t have connections with “The Exorcist” or “The Pope’s Exorcist” featuring Russell Crowe as an exorcist, Crowe portrays Anthony Miller, a tormented actor. As he delves into a supernatural horror film production, his daughter Lee (played by Ryan Simpkins) starts questioning whether he’s relapsing into old vices or if there might be something darker lurking behind the scenes.
Time Cut
In a typical day for high school science prodigy Lucy Field (played by Madison Bailey on “Outer Banks”), she stumbles upon a time machine. With this newfound gadget, Lucy resolves to journey back in time and prevent the tragic murder of her older sister Summer (Antonia Gentry from “Ginny & Georgia”). Can she navigate the early 2000s and expose the killer before it’s too late? Or will she find herself singing “Bye Bye Bye”… to her own life?!? The answer lies in the passage of time.

The Substance
One of the best-reviewed movies of the year is also one of the bloodiest. Gory body horror The Substance stars Demi Moore (Feud) as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn — temporarily — as the gorgeous, twenty-something Sue (Kinds of Kindness‘ Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. Easy, right?

Amityville: Where the Echo Lives
1979’s “The Amityville Horror,” a renowned horror film adapted from the popular novel of the same name, sparked numerous sequels, reboots, and imitations that were not associated with the DeFeo murders or the infamous Amityville house, like “Amityville: Where the Echo Lives“. In this low-budget Lionsgate production, a paranormal investigator (Sarah McDonald) receives a distressing call from a woman claiming her home is haunted and uncovers the house’s chilling past.

“Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” (Spanish “Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin”) depicts a rabies-like plague sweeping across the globe, transforming humans into aggressive beings. Javier (Francisco Ortiz) has been living in his own apocalyptic state for some time; grieving the loss of his wife and estranged from his family for over a year, his only companion is Lúculo, his cat. As the disease escalates, his sister urges him to leave Vigo and seek refuge in the Canary Islands, but their plan falls apart. Forced to depart, Javier and Lúculo encounter unexpected travel companions on land and sea. “Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin” is a tale of grief, a survival journey, both physically and emotionally, filled with action, suspense, an infectious disease, a touch of blood… and a grumpy cat.
