New Joker 2 Teaser Claims “He’s Not Sick, He’s Perfect”

New Joker 2 Teaser Claims "He's Not Sick, He's Perfect"

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and film critic who has seen more superhero movies than I can count, I must admit that the latest teaser for Joker: Folie à Deux has me genuinely intrigued. The first film was a masterclass in character study and psychological drama, and it seems that Todd Phillips is doubling down on that formula for the sequel.

In a recent teaser for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn reassures everyone, “He’s not ill! He’s flawless.” This line comes from the upcoming sequel to “Joker,” which seems to be returning to more art-house aesthetics, as indicated by the latest trailer. The film is set to make its official debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival this week.

The new trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux” resembles a time bomb counting down, filled with rapid-fire scenes. It showcases Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck, struggling internally while being transported in a police van. However, instead of just internal struggles, the voices in his head transform into actual voiceovers, where characters from both the original movie and the sequel label him as “ill,” “delusional,” “a deeply troubled individual,” and a “monster.”

In the bustle of reporters outside what appears to be a courtroom during Fleck’s trial, it’s only Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn (Gaga) who defends Arthur, exclaiming passionately that he isn’t mentally ill but rather “perfect.” He is the Joker. The scene concludes with Arthur regaining composure in the back of a police van, his manic laughter subsiding after the outburst.

In simpler terms, the recently released trailer for “Joker 2” appears to continue the trend of the film series veering towards high-end art-house movies. This depiction of the Joker seems focused on the gradual slide into madness, with this time the insanity affecting not only Arthur Fleck but also others such as Lee Quinzel (Gaga), police officers, Arkham Asylum inmates, and courtroom figures. If the first movie showed how an individual can spiral down the social/emotional ladder and become radicalized, this sequel seems to delve into how that radicalized person can impact and corrupt society as a whole. The socio-political comparisons are evident, but it remains unclear whether they will help or hurt “Joker 2” during a highly polarized year.

In the movie “Joker: Folie a Deux,” director Todd Phillips collaborated with Scott Silver on the script. Apart from Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, this film boasts an impressive cast that includes Zazie Beetz reprising her role from the initial film, Catherine Keener as Arthur’s lawyer Maryanne Stewart, Harry Lawtey portraying Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent, Steve Coogan stepping into the shoes of TV show host Paddy Meyers, Brendon Gleeson, and Jacob Lofland in roles yet to be disclosed.

Joker: Folie a Deux opens in theaters on October 4th.
