In a shock to some devoted God of War enthusiasts, an unexpected alteration has occurred within the series. In 2018, Santa Monica Studios, under the guidance of Cory Barlog, refreshed the God of War franchise, leading to immense acclaim. The 2018 version of God of War is often hailed as one of the greatest games ever made, and its 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarok, which carried on this reboot, has also received high praise. However, the future direction of the God of War series remains uncertain. As a result, PlayStation fans are currently split regarding the game’s setting. For now, and for the next few years likely, God of War fans continue to immerse themselves in the 2018 reboot and Ragnarok, unearthing new discoveries along the way.
In contrast to earlier God of War series, the most striking variation between the reboot and Ragnarok lies in the character development of Kratos. Given his advanced age and acquisition of a son, his demeanor has undergone a significant transformation, becoming more mature and realistic. Additionally, he now sports a beard, is older in appearance, and has a slightly smaller frame. This altered look is immediately apparent to players who have experienced the 2018 game or Ragnarok but are familiar with the older God of War games. Although these alterations may appear minor, they are often overlooked.
Currently, a notable post on the God of War subreddit focuses on the fact that the 2018 reboot altered both the location and design of Kratos’ tattoos. This revelation was surprising for the original poster, and given the post’s high engagement, it seems many in the community were equally intrigued. However, some commenters have noted that while this modification might be subtle, it’s not exclusive to the more recent installments of the game series.
I only now realized that changed the location (and a bit the shape) of Kratos’s tattoos.

One person commented that it’s unlikely there would be more than two games in a row without any alteration to the tattoos in this series.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that there are other minor adjustments too. The illustrations provided here also highlight a slightly more inconspicuous change – the positioning of his stomach scar has been shifted in the updated versions of the game as well.
It’s unclear why Santa Monica Studios persists in making these small adjustments, but it seems to be a recurring trend. Therefore, when the next series starts, we anticipate that similar changes might occur once more.
