New Labyrinth Movie Reportedly in Development From Nosferatu’s Robert Eggers

As a connoisseur of cinematic masterpieces, steeped in the rich tapestry of film history, I am absolutely thrilled by the news that Robert Eggers is set to remake the timeless classic, “Labyrinth.” This film, with its unique blend of whimsy and darkness, has long held a special place in my heart.

Following the unveiling of his chilling remake “Nosferatu”, Jeff Sneider from The InSneider has revealed that Robert Eggers is now set to take charge of a new adaptation of the iconic 1986 musical fantasy film, “Labyrinth”. This upcoming project will be developed in partnership with Sony Pictures and the Jim Henson Company. Originally directed by Henson and featuring puppets from his Creature Shop, “Labyrinth” revolves around Sarah, a 16-year-old girl portrayed by Jennifer Connelly, who must navigate a maze that keeps transforming to rescue her baby brother from the grasp of the Goblin King, Jareth (portrayed by David Bowie), with assistance from various mystical creatures along the way.

Although the movie didn’t resonate with viewers or critics when it first came out, Labyrinth has since transformed into a cult favorite due to its unique blend of fantastical narrative and haunting visuals, memorable characters, and Bowie’s mesmerizing portrayal. Similar to Henson’s earlier film, The Dark Crystal, which also had modest success initially, Labyrinth would find greater success long after its initial theater release.

If rumors are correct that Eggers is planning to work on Labyrinth as his next project, this would mark a shift from his usual R-rated films (unless he decides to intensify the darker aspects). Despite never having directed anything suitable for all ages, Eggers’ distinctive gothic style could be perfect for updating Labyrinth while still preserving its iconic charm that has captivated fans for many years.

Past Attempts to Make a Labyrinth Sequel

Over the years, several attempts have been made to create a sequel to the beloved fantasy movie. In 2016, it was revealed that Nicole Perlman, known for her work on films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, Detective Pikachu, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, was assigned to write the sequel script. Shortly afterwards, Fede Álvarez was hired to direct a new version of the movie, with Lisa Henson (daughter of Jim Henson) producing. Unfortunately, neither project managed to move forward.

2020 marked the involvement of Scott Derrickson, director of “Doctor Strange,” in the sequel he was jointly penning with Maggie Levin. Lisa Henson and her brother Brian Henson were overseeing production. Connelly expressed interest in 2021 about possibly being part of the sequel, but wasn’t certain if it would ever materialize. Unfortunately, Derrickson’s project did not come to fruition. Regarding the “Labyrinth” sequel, when asked for an update, Brian Henson referred the question to his sister Lisa, who is CEO of the Jim Henson Company. This project excites them, but they cannot discuss it yet.
