James Gunn’s forthcoming take on Superman is generating immense anticipation among fans, who are eagerly awaiting this fresh perspective on the legendary character. While details about the movie’s storyline remain scarce beyond what’s been shown in the trailer, Gunn occasionally gives fans glimpses behind the scenes, fueling both excitement and speculation about the film. Recently, the renowned director shared an intimidating picture of Lex Luthor‘s character, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult from the X-Men series, on his social media platform (formerly Twitter), stating, “In honor of Lex Luthor’s 85th anniversary, here’s an exclusive photo of Nicholas Hoult as Lex in our upcoming film, @Superman.” The photograph was captured by the movie’s VFX supervisor, Stephane Ceretti.
In this behind-the-scenes shot, Hoult can be seen dressed sharply on the movie set. However, his piercing stare suggests he’s not your average corporate tycoon. Despite lacking superpowers, Luthor has consistently been a nuisance to Superman. Although the picture doesn’t disclose much – or anything at all – about the film’s storyline, it hints that this portrayal of the villain is someone to be taken seriously.
Initially introduced in Action Comics #23 back in 1940, Luthor has since established himself as one of the most renowned villains, not just within comic books, but across popular culture at large. Originally depicted as a mad scientist with world domination ambitions, he later transformed into a shrewd billionaire tycoon. Luther’s animosity towards Superman stems from his belief that the Man of Steel poses a danger to mankind and that his powers are unjustified. Despite his criminal actions, Luthor perceives himself as humanity’s savior rather than an ordinary felon, and on several occasions, he has taken on traits reminiscent of an antihero.
Through the years, this character has transitioned to live-action adaptations in various forms. Notable portrayals include Gene Hackman embodying him in the original Superman movies, Michael Rosenbaum’s younger version in the TV series Smallville, and Jesse Eisenberg playing an eccentric tech CEO in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
As a film enthusiast, I’m genuinely thrilled about Nicholas Hoult stepping into the iconic villain role. Although he has some big shoes to fill, his portrayal so far suggests he’s more than capable. He’s well aware of the responsibility that comes with such a significant part, acknowledging the anticipation in an interview with GQ, “There’s definitely expectation around it, but the excitement from fans is what I aim to channel and leverage for the benefit of the process.” James Gunn’s script was what truly convinced Hoult of the character’s potential. Upon reading it, he exclaimed, “Lex is a fascinating character, and James has done an exceptional job of creating him on paper. I hope our interpretation and the work we did on set have successfully brought Lex to life in an engaging way.
Superman will be released on July 11, 2025.
