New Lockerbie Bombing Drama Reveals Untold Stories and Hidden Secrets

This new drama titled “The Bombing of Pan Am 103” narrates the genuine events following the 1988 Lockerbie bombing incident. It’s a joint production by the BBC, Netflix, MGM, and World Productions.

In a recent Q&A session, Simon Heath, CEO and creative director of World Productions (responsible for shows like Line of Duty and Vigil), expressed that the series they are working on is a “compelling drama that demands to be watched.

He mentioned that he had read the pilot in the year 2021. Initially, he believed he was well-versed on the Lockerbie incident, but upon reading the initial script and Adam [Morane-Griffiths, executive producer]’s insightful research paper, he discovered he actually knew less than he thought.

This story had many untold aspects. Unheard voices, unspoken narratives, and areas of inquiry that were neglected, all suggested that there was much more to the tale than met the eye. It seemed imperative that this story be shared and its underlying drama be revealed.

This show spotlights a main cast headed by Connor Swindells and Patrick J Adams, and it delves into the lives of various authentic individuals, among them are police officer Ed McCusker and FBI special agent Dick Marquise – characters whose tales have been re-enacted for the series.

I, too, emphasized the importance of our project being a joint effort among numerous partners, because we encountered a hurdle in locating an ideal venue for its implementation.

For years, I had assumed that since BBC had numerous Lockerbie-related projects in their pipeline, they would share my viewpoint: ‘This perspective is distinctive. These tales remain untold.’

Additionally, upon reading the script, Gaynor Holmes at BBC Scotland shared a similar sentiment. It seemed as though the script sailed swiftly through the BBC. As everyone read it, they appreciated the significance of the story, recognized that the moment was opportune, and agreed that it was something worth producing.

In summary, we secured the collaboration of BBC, but due to the grandeur of this type of drama, substantial resources are required. This project requires global support, not just from the UK. Fortunately, I have a strong relationship with the team at Netflix, specifically Anne Mensah, Mona Qureshi, and Manda Levin. They all showed immediate interest in our story and agreed to join us as partners.

This project is quite exceptional as it involves partnerships among MGM, BBC, Netflix, and us [World Productions]. The magnitude of this production is crucial for its presentation on screen.

The devastating explosion on Pan Am Flight 103, traveling from London’s Heathrow Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, was the most tragic terrorist incident ever to occur on British territory and marked the first significant act of terrorism targeting American citizens. This horrific event tragically claimed the lives of 270 individuals.

The narrative unfolds around the joint Scottish-American investigation into the tragedy, revealing its far-reaching impact on a tiny community and the families who suffered heartbreaking losses.
