New Manga Report Breaks Down the Top-Growing Series of 2024

As a seasoned gamer and avid manga reader with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the world of manga has seen some remarkable growth in recent years. The advent of digital platforms and streaming services has made it easier than ever for us fans to access these captivating stories from all corners of the globe.

As a manga enthusiast, it’s hard not to notice the surge in global popularity of this captivating art form. The strides made in technology have undeniably expanded its reach, making it easier than ever for North American readers like me to immerse ourselves in an array of fresh and timeless tales. A recent analysis even ranked which manga franchises are leading the pack in Western sales. While some perennial favorites may not shock those deeply entrenched in the manga scene, there are a few unexpected contenders climbing high on the anime chart.

More recently, we at egmr.ru disseminated a “report to Shonen Jump advertisers” where Weekly Shonen Jump outlined their top-performing series currently. According to the report, popular global series like One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, Sakomoto Days, Blue Box, and Kagurabachi are still active, and fans are flocking to them. Conversely, there are manga series that have reached their ends but continue to captivate readers such as Haikyuu, The Promised Neverland, Demon Slayer, and My Hero Academia. Interestingly, the latest 2024 US Manga preference report includes some stories not exclusive to Weekly Shonen Jump.

North America’s Top Manga in 2024

Based on a recent report by Circana Entertainment, it’s revealed that six manga series currently dominate the anime market in North America for the first half of 2024. As per the new report from Circana’s Senior Executive Director, Kristen McLean, the pandemic significantly increased global manga sales and this trend is expected to continue. Regarding physical bookstore sales, McLean advises persistence since she believes that the fans gained during the pandemic are not vanishing. The six top-selling titles are:

  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • The Apothecary Diaries
  • Delicious In Dungeon
  • One Piece: Ace’s Story – The Manga
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu Academy

Manga Spin-Offs Are Big Business

It’s not surprising that popular titles like “The Apothecary Diaries, Delicious in Dungeon, Jujutsu Kaisen“, and “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” made it to this list. However, the spin-off series might catch anime fans off guard. Both “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu Academy” and “One Piece: Ace’s Story” are additional stories from their main franchises. In the case of “Kimetsu Academy“, it offers a new tale about the Demon Slayer Corps in a much lighter setting compared to the original story. Interestingly, the manga did inspire an anime series that can be streamed on Crunchyroll, but each episode is roughly just one minute long.

The story “One Piece: Ace’s Backstory” delves into the past exploits of Monkey D. Luffy’s older, flame-wielding brother, Ace. Currently, there’s no official word on whether this series will be adapted into an anime, but its popularity is undeniable. Although Eiichiro Oda initially conceived the idea for “One Piece”, the manga was illustrated by Boichi, who is also known for his work on “Dr. Stone”. As of now, it remains unconfirmed if Ace’s prequel will receive its own anime adaptation.
