3D games featuring Mario have been standout features on most Nintendo gaming systems, with titles such as “Super Mario 64” and “Super Mario Galaxy” serving as platform-defining, system-selling releases. However, at this point, no 3D Mario game for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially announced, causing some fans to speculate about its potential release date. Nintendo has remained silent on the matter so far, although they are releasing a new 3D platformer titled “Donkey Kong Bananza” next month. This has led many to suspect that a true sequel to “Super Mario Odyssey” might take some time to materialize.
Beyond these apprehensions, it’s worth noting that Nintendo hasn’t disclosed who is developing the game Donkey Kong Bananza. This isn’t unexpected from Nintendo, as they typically keep the developer details under wraps until the game is released. Nevertheless, speculation among Nintendo enthusiasts suggests that if the team behind Super Mario Odyssey is responsible for Bananza, they might not be able to produce another 3D Mario title for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, it appears fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Podcaster Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly recently addressed this matter in a post on X/Twitter.
The game titled ‘DK Bananza‘ is being crafted by a fresh squad, who broke off from the original ‘Odyssey‘ team. Many of the younger developers on the ‘Odyssey‘ team grew up playing Donkey Kong Country games and are eager to create one, as Reilly mentioned. It’s rumored that the Kremlings will be back in this new game, while 3D Mario is still set for release.
Readers should remember to approach such matters cautiously, but it’s worth mentioning that podcaster Reilly appears to have strong ties within the gaming industry. Over time, he has interviewed several former developers from the Donkey Kong Country series and Metroid Prime, which suggests he may have access to insider knowledge. Moreover, in a later post, Reilly hinted at gaining these insights through conversations on his podcast and forging connections with developers who prefer not to give interviews.
It’s not impossible that the game Donkey Kong Bananza has been under development for quite some time now. Back in the day, a 3D Donkey Kong game was being considered by Vicarious Visions several years ago. Given Reece’s comments and the details about that project, it could be that some of the team behind Bananza took over after the cancellation of “Donkey Kong Freedom.” It’s worth mentioning that there appear to be some notable similarities between these two projects, with Pauline playing a significant part in both.

It’s been revealed that “Donkey Kong Bananza,” developed by a team previously involved with “Super Mario Odyssey,” has been in production for some time. Since this year marks the 40th anniversary of the original “Super Mario Bros” on NES, and next year will bring a sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” there’s a good chance we might hear an announcement about something related soon, either this year or early in 2023. For now, fans can look forward to “Mario Kart World” as a temporary alternative to Mario games, and “Donkey Kong Bananza” as a promising 3D platformer for those with a Nintendo Switch 2. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see what news comes our way.
