New Midwife Sister Struggles to Sew and Sister Monica’s Cold Shoulder

It appears that Sister Catherine, the latest addition to Call the Midwife, may have a rocky beginning.

In the video (up top), Sister Catherine notices a bag containing sewing tools like needles and yarn, but her search is interrupted when Sister Monica enters, expressing her belief that there won’t be anything valuable or worthwhile inside.

Assuming the bag is meant for leisure activities, Sister Catherine shares this thought with Sister Monica. In response, Sister Monica expresses that she only enjoys embroidery if it serves a religious or church-related purpose.

Sister Catherine openly acknowledges that she too faces difficulty in discovering a pastime that aligns appropriately with her role as a clergy member.

Trampolining has always been a passion of mine, and it’s certainly not a religious activity… I also took up golf since my parents were avid players, so it was expected that we would follow suit.

In my observations, parents tend to make many assumptions, Sister Monica Joan suggests. “They just can’t help it,” Sister Catherine responds.

To break the increasing uncomfortable quietness, Sister Catherine shares that she experimented with crochet as a novel pastime, but ultimately found herself drawn to origami instead.

With a polite – if slightly uncomfortable – smile, Sister Monica silently leaves the room.

It seems Sister Monica is hoping that the recent encounter was an unusual instance of discomfort between her and the new arrival, and it won’t happen again in the future.

This week, it’s been announced that Sister Catherine will be a fresh face in the cast, bringing along a compelling personal history.

In the video, it’s suggested that Sister Catherine originates from a tightly bonded family consisting of three siblings and two employed parents. However, everyone was taken aback when she disclosed her intention to dedicate her life to serving God instead.

Initially trying to conceal my spiritual beliefs, I was ultimately discovered, leading to a profound rift with everyone around me. This significant turn of events promises to play a pivotal role in my character’s narrative, revealing more about me as the story unfolds.

Currently, she finds solace at Nonnatus House and is embarking on a journey to become a midwife, yet she faces significant choices that need careful consideration.

As Catherine moves nearer to making her First Vows, her fear intensifies. (or) The nearer Catherine comes to taking her First Vows, the more terrified she feels. (or) With each step towards making her First Vows, Catherine grows increasingly afraid.

Is her action appropriate? Could a life spent helping God and others, no matter how painful it may be for those who have always cared about her, possibly make up for the hurt she’s inflicted on them?
