As a seasoned gamer and die-hard anime enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the Gundam universe since its inception, I must say that the announcement of this upcoming movie trilogy based on Char Aznable’s origin story is nothing short of exhilarating!
Even though Mobile Suit Gundam debuted in the 1970s, it remains a dominant force within the anime industry today. The mech franchise has expanded its reach by venturing beyond the initial universe and delving into diverse storylines involving aerial mechs. Thankfully, the classic conflict between Earth Federation and Zeon’s Principality will be revisited as a movie is planned, centering around Char Aznable, the main antagonist from the original series.
This month, Gundam is making a comeback to the big screen, and it’s not just one movie, but a trilogy! These films are essentially a retelling of the storyline from “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin,” which focused on Char. Set to premiere in Japanese cinemas on September 13th, these movies will adapt the original anime series into full-length feature films. Unfortunately, the trilogy won’t include any newly created footage for the big screen, but it promises to let fans reexperience Char’s backstory in a more expansive format.
Gundam: The Origin Returns
These three movies are named “Char’s Counterattack”, “The War in the Pocket Arc”, and “The Loose Daggers Arc”. Although they are scheduled for release in Japan this month, it remains unclear if this trilogy will be shown in North American cinemas.

If you missed out on watching Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin earlier, it’s now available for streaming on Crunchyroll. This anime focuses on Char Aznable, a character later known as the ‘Red Comet’, and his sister Sayla Mass. Their lives are shaped by the unexpected death of their father Zeon Zum Deikun, a leader among Spacenoids. The four-episode series, titled “Chronicle of Char and Sayla”, explores their journey in a chronological manner, giving insight into the events that led to Char’s fame as an ace pilot for the Zeon forces. This story will be presented in the style of event screenings. The Zabi family who take control of Side 3 and establish the Principality of Zeon, the early days of many celebrated Zeon pilots, the mysteries behind mobile suit development, conflicts with Earth Federation Forces, and the events leading up to war are all unveiled in this series.
