As a long-time gamer who grew up with the iconic games from Nintendo, I am absolutely thrilled about the latest addition of Tetris DX to the Nintendo Switch Online library! The surprise release of this Game Boy Color game is just the cherry on top, making my excitement even sweeter.
Instead of just one free game, Nintendo Switch Online offers two, with one being a delightful surprise. Additionally, there’s more to look forward to than just multiplayer access. A significant draw for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is the ability to play classic and nostalgic games from past decades. These games originate from systems such as NES, SNES, N64, and various Game Boy consoles. It seems that GameCube games might be added to the Nintendo Switch Online collection soon as well.
Speaking of the freshly released free games, one is modeled after an NES game and the other mimics a Game Boy Color game. Interestingly, while the first one was earlier announced, the second one has been covertly launched. To break it down, the game that was previously teased and now added to the Nintendo Switch Online library as a new offering is none other than Tetris DX, which resembles a Game Boy Color game.
Here’s another delightful twist! To mark the launch of the duo of games onto Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo has brought on board gaming legend and developer Alexey Pajitnov, the brainchild behind Tetris. He has prepared a unique message exclusively for Nintendo enthusiasts, which you can find below.
Just like before, these updates are permanent on Nintendo Switch Online, but you’ll need an active membership to keep enjoying them. If your Nintendo Switch Online subscription lapses, access to the entire online library will disappear until you reactivate it.
Unlike certain free games offered with Nintendo Switch Online, one of these doesn’t necessitate the pricier Expansion Pack. For instance, you can play the NES version of Tetris using just the basic $20-a-year Nintendo Switch Online service. Conversely, to access Tetris DX on Game Boy Color, you’ll need the more expensive Expansion Pack tier. Keep in mind that while the standard Nintendo Switch Online subscription costs $20 for a 12-month period, the Expansion Pack comes at a price of $60 for an equal duration.
