As a lifelong Pokemon fan who has grown up with the franchise since its inception in 1996, this latest revelation about Eevee’s scrapped Flying-type evolution left me feeling like I’ve just been hit by a Rhyperior’s smash attack! The thought of a new Eevee evolution has always been a tantalizing prospect, and the idea that it was shelved due to cost analysis seems almost too ridiculous to be true.

1996 marked the introduction of the most beloved Pokemon, Eevee, which has continued to charm fans ever since. This Normal-type Pokemon is nothing short of adorable, and when Generation I reintroduced Eevee, it quickly won over fans. From the anime to the video games, it was clear that Pokemon had a hit on their hands, and this success was largely attributed to its evolutions. To date, a total of eight adorable Eevee evolutions have been introduced. For years now, fans have been eagerly awaiting a new evolution for Eevee, but a recent leak suggests that such an evolution was discarded behind the scenes.

This week, a significant leak at Game Fork (developer of Pokemon games) was exposed, revealing a 40 GB trove of unreleased assets and documents about Pokemon. Online users stumbled upon this cache, which reportedly originated from Game Fork. In no time, fans scoured through the information, and it was then that a document emerged detailing an abandoned Flying-type evolution for Eevee.

Eevee’s Flying-type Evolution Was Scrapped for Generation VII

The document states that since the design resembles one made by a fan, it was concluded that the costs for this Pokemon would be quite steep. Unless Flying Eevee becomes the central character in a game or holds significant value, the high cost is not justified at this time. We may consider this later, but for now, we’ll hold off on it until we can assess the importance of this new Pokemon.

Based on leaked information, it appears that an initial concept for a Flying-type Eevee was created, yet it wasn’t turned into digital form. The artwork for this design is stored within the Game Freak office, leaving its appearance unknown. If the leak proves accurate, it seems that Game Freak had planned to introduce an Eevee evolution in Generation VII, but ultimately decided against it due to budget considerations.

New Pokemon Leak Reveals an Axed Eevee Evolution

Back in the day, when I imagined what could have been for Flying-type Eevee evolution, I always thought the Pokémon community would be all the richer for it. Fast forward to Generation VI, and we finally saw Eevee’s Fairy-type evolution come to life on screen with Sylveon making a grand entrance. They have truly left their mark since then, remaining the most recent addition to Eevee’s impressive lineage.

Will We Ever Get a New Eevee Evolution in Pokemon?

I must admit, as a devoted Pokémon fan, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement and disappointment mixed together upon hearing about the latest report. We’ve been eagerly anticipating a new Eevee evolution ever since Generation VI wrapped up, hoping for that long-awaited update in Generation VII. Now, with Generation X on the horizon, it seems our hopes may have been premature once more.

Luckily, the axed debut did not shut the door on Eevee as a whole. The document suggests Game Freak is open to a Flying-type Eevee, but its current design needed an overhaul. The evolution could very well appear in the future, and of course, there are other Eevee evolutions to explore. From Rock-type to Dragon-type, there are tons of types that Eevee has yet to embrace. But given this latest leak, it seems a Flying-type Eevee could join the Pokedex next.
