In the Pokemon series, Mega Evolutions have taken a backseat for some time now. They were the main feature in games like Pokemon X and Y, but their utilization has been less frequent in more recent titles such as Pokemon Sword, Shield, Scarlet, and Violet. However, this trend is set to change in 2025, as The Pokemon Company has announced that Mega Evolutions will make a comeback in the game Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Currently, specifics are scarce, but it appears that Mega Evolutions will also reappear in the Pokemon Trading Card Game.
According to PokeBeach, two names for Pokemon Trading Card Game sets have been registered in Japan: “Mega Brave” and “Mega Symphony.” At the moment, it’s unclear when these sets will be launched, but PokeBeach mentions that these trademarks typically appear around 6-8 months before a set’s release. Normally, these sets are scheduled to debut within two months of a new game, although this process tends to take longer in North America. For instance, the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet TCG expansion was unveiled on March 31st, 2023, approximately four months following the games’ release on Nintendo Switch.
Each February 27th marks Pokemon Day, honoring the initial debut of both Pokemon Red and Green versions. Every year, The Pokemon Company conducts a Pokemon Presents live stream, disclosing details about upcoming video games and merchandise. Last year’s presentation revealed Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which is scheduled for release sometime in 2021. We might receive further updates on the game during the upcoming stream, including a possible release date. Additionally, we may discover new Mega Evolutions that haven’t been featured in previous games.
There’s a chance that the Pokémon Day live stream could provide us with clues about the comeback of Mega Evolution in the Pokémon Trading Card Game (PTCG). Although these trademarks imply that the new sets are still a few months away, it’s not uncommon for The Pokémon Company to give sneak peeks beforehand. It was disclosed during the Pokémon Worlds in August that Trainer’s Pokémon would be making a comeback within the game, and this feature will only become available later this month for Japanese players, and in March for those in North America.
Since Mega Evolutions haven’t been part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game for quite a while now, it remains to be seen if any adjustments will be made to their gameplay mechanics. As of right now, they haven’t shown up in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, which leaves us curious about whether The Pokemon Company might introduce them into the game to align with Legends: Z-A. We’ll have to wait and see for answers to our many questions, but we might start getting some clarity next month!
