As a child of the ’90s, I can confidently say that the news of a new Power Rangers movie has sent my inner teenager into overdrive! Growing up with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was like having a superhero family right at home – and now, it seems they’re making a grand comeback.
Not too long past, Power Rangers was on the brink of a multimedia franchise combining both film and television, which Hasbro was working on with Netflix and Paramount. However, following a prolonged period of silence regarding updates, it appeared that this reboot wouldn’t come to fruition. Yet, recent news may indicate a change in these circumstances. According to Daniel Richtman’s report, a new film seems to be in its early stages at Paramount, although plot details are scarce. Furthermore, another source @Jinsakuu claims that this is a complete reboot and has no connection to the prior Netflix project whatsoever.
Jinsakuu has shared some extra insights, and here’s where it becomes a bit intricate: Over the past few months, Hasbro and Paramount have apparently been discussing business matters intensively, and they seem to have made considerable progress in these talks. If all goes as planned, Paramount and Skydance will secure the rights for Power Rangers media and are actively working on creating the upcoming movie.
It’s been mentioned that a purchase of the property has been considered by both companies, who are amenable to this idea, but it ultimately depends on the ideal price for the transaction. Currently, however, these two entities are collaborating on the film project, which is planned for a cinematic debut. Insiders suggest that the release might happen towards the end of 2026, and the studio is mindful of the lessons learned from the 2017 reboot, so they’re being careful to select the optimal release date before any formal announcement.
At this point, it’s unclear if the upcoming Power Rangers project will be a reboot of Mighty Morphin specifically, or if it will combine aspects from various stories and teams within the franchise. Since Mighty Morphin seems the most likely candidate, we’ll have to wait for more information. However, this new development does align with previous comments made by Hasbro President Olivier Dumont about the brand, which could suggest that these are the “exciting plans” he mentioned.
It’s intriguing to learn that Paramount is quickly moving forward with a Power Rangers movie, indicating their eagerness to invest in another possible blockbuster franchise. Over the years, Hasbro has experienced various financial adjustments for its film ventures, and the Power Rangers series, since its acquisition by Hasbro, has seen quite a rollercoaster of ups and downs.
After celebrating the 30th anniversary with Power Rangers Cosmic Fury and the 30th Anniversary special Once & Always, Hasbro has largely put the brakes on new franchise projects. Since then, they haven’t revealed any plans outside of Netflix’s developing universe, also halting the Lightning Collection and most other toy line launches.
For this year, it was disclosed by Hasbro that as of 2025, Playmates Toys will assume the license for Power Rangers. We can expect some formal unveilings of the forthcoming toy collection in 2025.
