As a seasoned gamer with memories still fresh from the chaotic days of PlayStation Direct queues during the early PS5 era, I find myself reminiscing those times once again due to the latest DualSense controller preorders fiasco. It’s like stepping into a time machine and reliving all the frustration of waiting in lines for limited-edition goods.

View Urgent ForecastFans of PlayStation are experiencing a sense of déjà vu, reminiscent of the early days of PS5 when PlayStation Direct queues were common, due to the recent preorders for the new DualSense controller. This is because the Astro Bot-themed DualSense controller that was recently unveiled has been in high demand on the PlayStation Direct site, causing the page to crash and requiring people to join queues just to access PlayStation Direct. If you were hoping to purchase this controller from other retailers, it appears that it is now sold out, leaving only those who acted quickly with a chance of obtaining one.
The latest Astro Bot game has rekindled and intensified interest in the series due to its recognition as groundbreaking platformers demonstrating PlayStation technology such as PS5 and VR devices. Leveraging this resurgence, Sony recently unveiled a new Astro Bot controller. Even if you weren’t or aren’t keen on the games, the new DualSense version is quite impressive, particularly in its custom, limited-edition designs.
It appears that such high demand existed for this controller that it caused the PlayStation Direct site to crash. When attempting to locate a preorder link for the controller on the PlayStation Direct platform, I was continually redirected to a generic “accessories” page with no option to preorder. After repeatedly refreshing the page, I encountered a maintenance error page, reminiscent of the infamous PlayStation Direct queue experienced during PS5 preorders years ago. Wait times increased significantly, reaching up to an hour, and even after gaining access to PlayStation Direct, the store continued to malfunction.
As a PlayStation gamer, I was delighted to discover that I could purchase the new Astro Bot DualSense controller from various retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target. However, my excitement quickly turned sour when I realized how swiftly the stock depleted at each of these stores. It vanished faster than you can complete a level in Astro Bot! Now, all three stores are saying that the controller is out of stock. Either gamers jumped on the pre-orders or scalpers swooped in, and before we know it, we’ll see those $80 controllers being resold at inflated prices on third-party sites.
Astro Bot releases exclusively for the PS5 on September 6th.
