As a long-time gamer who has seen the evolution of console interfaces, I must say that the latest PS5 update has given me a breath of fresh air, especially when it comes to customizing my home screen. While PlayStation still lags behind its previous version in this regard, the new “Welcome Hub” is a step in the right direction. On the other hand, Xbox‘s insistence on keeping ads on their home screen feels like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole.
As a gaming enthusiast embracing my new PS5, I can’t help but notice the stark contrast between its latest update and the user interface on my old Xbox One, as well as the Series S and X. This recent PS5 upgrade finally lets me customize my home screen, even though it’s not quite up to par with the PS4 yet. But hey, progress is progress!
Currently, Microsoft has upgraded the interfaces of Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X through multiple updates, placing it ahead of PlayStation in this regard as they are only now catching up. However, with each new version, one demand from fans that Xbox hasn’t addressed yet remains: the absence of a feature to hide ads on the home screen.
For quite some time now, Xbox users have voiced their discontent over an issue: the excessive advertisements on the Xbox dashboard. These ads, not only one but several, are dynamic and cannot be eliminated or even relocated from the user’s view. They are a significant distraction, conflicting with the concept of home screen personalization, dynamic themes, and all that the Xbox dashboard stands for. Microsoft acknowledges the demand from users for an ad-free experience or at least an option to disable ads. However, they have yet to make any changes in this regard.
On the other hand, the introduction of the latest Welcome Hub in PS5 has highlighted that unlike the Xbox dashboard, there are no ads displayed on the PS5’s home screen. Additionally, users can choose to disable widgets related to services such as PS Plus, which is a feature not available on Xbox where the Xbox Game Pass is prominently displayed on the home screen.
While Xbox still has a chance to make changes, given that they’ve had several opportunities to do so through updates, it appears rather improbable that they will grant the option to Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X users at this point.
