As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating through the terrifying landscapes of Raccoon City and battling the undead hordes of the Umbrella Corporation, I must admit my excitement at the possibility of Zach Cregger, the brilliant mind behind ‘Barbarian’, helming a new Resident Evil film.
Director Zach Cregger, known for “Barbarian,” might be in negotiations to lead a new Resident Evil movie production, as suggested by The InSneider’s reports. Previously, Cregger declined an invitation to direct the Clue reboot, and is now allegedly discussing Resident Evil instead. It’s important to remember that this is just a rumor, as nothing has been officially confirmed, and movie plans are known for their fluidity. However, given that “Barbarian” boasted intriguing plot twists, a deep-rooted mystery, and a revolting creature with an emotional history, which closely resemble the Resident Evil game series, Cregger could potentially be an ideal choice!
Over the years, seven Resident Evil films have been produced, with the first six forming part of a single narrative. The most recent addition, released in 2021 as Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, is a reboot by Johannes Roberts that closely follows the original source material, though its reception was somewhat divided. Filmed in Sudbury, Ontario, there appeared to be plans for a sequel to this movie in the same location. In 2023, it was announced on Raccoon City’s official website that the production company Raccoon HG Film Productions had been granted $2 million from the provincial government to film a movie titled “Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles” in Sudbury.
Approximately a year and a half has passed, and Sony hasn’t revealed the mentioned film yet, leaving us unsure about its influence on future Resident Evil movies directed by Cregger. There’s a chance we might witness another Resident Evil reboot, or Cregger may incorporate aspects from the previous movie. Johannes Roberts had shown an inclination towards making a sequel, but he could be occupied with his upcoming shark horror film, “The Red Triangle.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been following Resident Evil since its initial release back in 1996. It’s hard to express just how much this horror franchise means to me and fellow gamers. But here’s the thing – despite our deep affection for it, the movies haven’t quite captured the essence of the games, or managed to scare us half as much as those zombie-filled nights on our screens.
