New Sonic the Hedgehog Racing Game Announced

New Sonic the Hedgehog Racing Game Announced

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of Sonic racing under my belt (or should I say, thumbs), the announcement of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds at The Game Awards left me both intrigued and slightly skeptical. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed the high-speed antics of Sonic and his pals in various racing titles over the years, but the last one was Team Sonic Racing back in 2018. That’s a long time to wait for another spin around the track.

Tonight at The Game Awards, Sega unveiled a new title in the Sonic the Hedgehog series: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Unlike previous trailers, this one spotlighted Shadow instead of Sonic. In the trailer, Shadow is seen getting into a car and accelerating out of a garage, leaving a fiery wake behind him. The game will be available on various platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).

At present, Sega has merely announced that the game titled Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be released at some point in the near future, without specifying a precise date. As it stands, there’s no preorder option available on any of its platforms, leaving us with limited information. Fingers crossed that they won’t keep us waiting too long for more details! For now, you can enjoy the trailer for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds below.

For quite some time now, Sonic the Hedgehog along with his fellow characters have been a part of several racing games. However, since the launch of “Team Sonic Racing” more than five years ago, fans have been eagerly waiting for another high-speed adventure featuring their favorite hedgehog. As of yet, we’re unsure about what will set this new game apart, but the title “CrossWorlds” might give us a clue. In the past, Sonic racing games have incorporated characters from different Sega franchises like Skies of Arcadia and Super Monkey Ball. Unlike its predecessor, “Team Sonic Racing” centered only around Sonic’s crew. Given this, it seems plausible that the upcoming installment could introduce non-Sonic characters once again.

It’s certainly possible that the name CrossWorlds might refer to characters from the Sonic movie franchise. Could we imagine a scenario where the Sonic video game characters compete in settings inspired by the movies, or even race against their movie counterparts? Given the addition of DLC based on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in Sonic x Shadow Generations, such a concept doesn’t seem too far-fetched!
