New Spider-Man Animated Series Star Was Nervous His Series Would Be “Annoying & Woke”

In a different twist from traditional Spider-Man depictions, the new series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” had Hudson Thames, the star, feeling apprehensive about the show’s transformations. Prior to its debut, Thames expressed concern that the series might come across as bothersome and socially aware in a conversation with Collider. The term “woke” carries significant weight in contemporary discussions, and this comment has left fans debating its intended meaning. Despite the controversy surrounding his statement, Thames has not provided further clarification or explanation. The show has faced some racist backlash online due to the portrayal of Norman and Harry Osborn as African American characters, among other decisions.

Thames expressed that he found it fantastic as he initially feared it might be aggravating and pretentious. However, to his delight, it turned out not to be the case, and he enthusiastically appreciated its superb writing style. He added that it seemed authentic, which resonated with him since he is the eldest of five brothers and has a good understanding of their lives and high school experiences. In essence, he felt the story was accurately portrayed.

The term “Woke” has gained prominence relatively quickly, accumulating numerous meanings along the way. Primarily, it denotes someone who is informed and sensitive towards social justice matters and identity politics. However, it’s been widely adopted as a sarcastic or derisive comment by some individuals. This usage can range from people who are openly prejudiced or disinterested in social issues to those who merely mock the perceived awkwardness of the discourse itself.

Thames rarely speaks publicly about such topics, leaving his intentions ambiguous. Some fans on social media are uneasy about the language he used, but others choose to give him the advantage of the doubt. Given that altering character races in adaptations is now quite common, and “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is designed as an alternate universe, it fits this situation particularly well.

In this particular universe, Colman Domingo portrays Norman Osborn, while Zeno Robinson takes on the role of his son, Harry. Interestingly, Norman serves as a mentor to Peter Parker much like Tony Stark does in the MCU’s primary timeline. However, contrary to popular belief, Peter and Harry are not best friends but merely classmates. Instead, Peter maintains a close bond with Nico Minoru, a character originally from the Runaways series.
