A fresh chapter in the world of The Amazing Spider-Man comics is here, and joining forces to bring it to life is acclaimed artist Pepe Larraz, along with Joe Kelly and John Romita Jr. This dynamic trio will reintroduce The Amazing Spider-Man later this year, promising plenty of unexpected surprises for enthusiasts. Larraz has built a strong reputation at Marvel, particularly in the X-Men segment and the Blood Hunt event series, where his projects often feature expansive casts. However, the focus in The Amazing Spider-Man will be squarely on our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and his rogues’ gallery. And when it comes to adversaries, Spider-Man is set to face a brand-new foe and an old nemesis.
In an exclusive conversation before the reintroduction of “Amazing Spider-Man,” we chatted with artist Pepe Larraz. Among other topics, he shared insights on joining the project, collaborating with Joe Kelly and John Romita Jr., the emergence of the new adversary Hellgate, brainstorming fresh character concepts, which Spidey baddies he’s eager to portray, and the anticipated comeback of Hobgoblin. Moreover, we are thrilled to disclose the covers and details for issues #3 and #4 of “Amazing Spider-Man,” due in May.
Question: Can you tell me how it came about that you are working as an artist for the latest Amazing Spider-Man, teamed with John Romita Jr.?
Pepe Larraz: For quite some time now, I’ve been yearning to create a standalone series that lets me delve deeply into one character. This approach offers new opportunities for storytelling, similar to playing different notes on a piano. Spider-Man was the first American comic book I ever read, and though our paths have crossed before, I never got to work on his series or shape my own interpretation of him. Eager to do so, I approached Marvel about working on Amazing Spider-Man. The fact that I’m collaborating with legends like JRJR and Joe Kelly not only makes this project more unique but also brings a certain level of pressure, which I must admit I feel.
Let’s discuss the character called Hellgate. He doesn’t seem like a typical adversary for Spider-Man, but I can share my thoughts on drawing John Romita Jr.’s design of this villain and his conflicts with Spidey. Also, I can explain how Hellgate’s danger will grow during the first year in the storyline.
Currently, I’m working on the initial storyline for our Spider-Man series, and as of now, I haven’t yet illustrated Hellgate. However, the design concept is captivating – it evokes a sense of ancient mystique, as if a slumbering entity had been awakened from an ancient and long-forgotten tomb. It radiates an overwhelming power, similar to a natural disaster on two legs, leaving destruction in its wake. I’m really looking forward to bringing this character to life; it promises to be a fantastic creative journey!
What aspects of crafting a new character, be it a hero or a villain, do you find most enjoyable? Are there any Spider-Man antagonists you’re eager to depict but haven’t had the opportunity to illustrate so far?
Whenever I design a new character’s appearance from the ground up, I strive to give it a unique twist compared to typical superhero characters you might be familiar with. The most enjoyable part is uncovering the essence of that character and discovering visual cues that narrate their story. Subsequently, I aim to make them both captivating and user-friendly in terms of drawing.
When I’m tasked with illustrating characters from a book like Marvel, I understand that they want me to express my unique interpretation. This freedom allows me to modify elements to highlight aspects I wish to emphasize. For instance, in a scene where the Rhino appears, I might choose to deviate from the traditional helmet-with-horn design and instead depict a real rhino head. This change makes the character appear more feral and less rational, reflecting his out-of-control behavior in the scene.
What’s your favorite part of drawing Hobgoblin?
My initial encounter with the Hobgoblin occurred through a Inferno crossover story, where his demonic abilities left me feeling quite uneasy. Thus, I was thrilled when Joe asked me to design this version of Hobgoblin with an even more chilling appearance. I aimed to make him menacing and frightening beyond belief, but it’s up to you to decide if my efforts paid off.
In summary, I’m eagerly anticipating the reactions of fans as they journey through my run on The Amazing Spider-Man, and here are some key elements you shouldn’t miss:
1. Fresh Perspectives: We’ll see a unique take on familiar characters and situations that will offer new insights into the world of Spidey.
2. Emotional Depth: Prepare for a deeper exploration of Peter Parker’s character as we delve into his personal struggles and triumphs.
3. Action-Packed Adventures: Expect thrilling action sequences, high-stakes battles, and web-slinging excitement that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
4. Rich Storytelling: The narrative will be woven with intricate plotlines, subtle Easter eggs, and thoughtful references to Spider-Man’s rich history.
5. Unpredictable Twists: Be prepared for unexpected twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end!
As a movie critic, I must say, Joe’s scripts never fail to resonate. He has an exceptional knack for humanizing superheroes, making their struggles relatable to us all. The challenges Spiderman faces are undeniably significant, and the looming threats feel genuinely terrifying, but it’s Peter’s personal issues that serve as our compass throughout the series. The way Joe breathes life into Peter, capturing his aspirations and apprehensions in a way that we can all recognize and empathize with, is truly commendable. I believe this story is one for everyone. As an artist, I’m merely striving to keep pace with the creative team and deliver my best work. It’s been refreshing to shift gears from the grandeur of event/crossover stories to a more personal connection with a single character, allowing me to experiment with new storytelling techniques. I feel as though I’m learning new skills. I hope you enjoy it!
