New SSD just dropped — swallows Xbox Game Pass whole and dares your Steam backlog to challenge it

Couldn’t it be amazing if we could store the entire PC Game Pass library onto a single solid-state drive (SSD)? And guess what, such a possibility is not just a dream anymore, thanks to a cutting-edge SSD from Kioxia!

The Kioxia LC9 boasts a massive storage capacity of 245.76 terabytes, and rest assured, that figure isn’t an error. Additionally, it offers an impressive 8 terabytes of storage space within a single NAND package.

With all that space, you could store a massive library of games, movies, or anything else.

With a PC Game Pass subscription, you can play more than 400 games. By following the suggestions from my colleague Cale Hunt, you’ll likely acquire numerous game titles from the PC Game Pass library instead of purchasing them individually on Steam.

Regardless of downloading all the games offered by PC Game Pass, there would be ample room on a single SSD even if each game required 150GB storage — which is not the case. In fact, you could still accommodate numerous additional games after installing the entire collection.

But before you go racing for your wallet, the Kioxia LC9 is not meant for everyday consumers.

While it may seem amusing to banter about employing the Kioxia LC9 for PC gaming, this storage solution is primarily designed for enterprise use. Its substantial capacity and rapid speeds make it perfect for tasks like AI training and managing hyperscale workloads, as acknowledged by our tech-savvy pals at Tom’s Hardware.

If you’re accustomed to standard consumer Solid State Drives, the specifications of the Kioxia LC9 might seem too good to be true. With read speeds reaching 12 gigabytes per second and write speeds up to 3 gigabytes per second, even the top-tier SSDs for everyday use appear sluggish by comparison.

However, it’s important to note that these speeds are relatively slower compared to certain high-performance PCIe 5.0 SSDs available in the enterprise market. Often, when it comes to storage devices, there’s a balance to strike between larger capacities and faster speeds.

According to Kioxia, the Kioxia LC9 is their enterprise SSD offering the greatest storage capacity via PCIe 5.0 technology. This drive comes in both 2.5-inch and EDSFF E3.L formats, while a more compact 122.88TB version can be found in the E3.S form factor.

Utilizing a big and efficient SSD offers the advantage that it can substitute for several HDDs, saving on both space and power consumption compared to HDDs. Furthermore, having just one drive eliminates the need for additional storage slots.

A select group of customers have already been given previews of the Kioxia LC9. Additionally, the company plans to showcase this SSD at the Future of Memory and Storage 2025 conference, which takes place from August 5-7 in Santa Clara, California.
