Star Wars Has Always Been Connected To Japanese Media
From the beginning, the Star Wars universe has drawn inspiration from Japanese media, with the first film drawing direct inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress. The samurai way of life served as a foundation for the Jedi Knights’ philosophy and attire. In recent times, Disney has endeavored to collaborate with other companies to create distinctive Star Wars properties that go beyond films, cartoons, and comics. Specifically, Disney enlisted Japanese animation studios to produce and animate Star Wars anime for its acclaimed Star Wars: Visions series.
In addition to anime, Lucasfilm has worked together in the past on manga adaptations as well. A manga series inspired by the original trilogy hit shelves in the late 90s, which was later followed by a manga adaptation of “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace.” More recently, Viz Media is publishing a Star Wars manga series that takes place during the High Republic era. “Star Wars: The High Republic: The Edge of Balance,” written by Shima Shinya and Daniel Jose Older, with illustrations by Mizuki Sakakibara, is one such example from this collection.
In a galaxy far, far away, the story unfolds around Jedi Knight Lily Tora-Asis, who serves on an Outer Rim planet during the Nihil assault as depicted in the central Star Wars novels. The fourth installment of “Star Wars: The High Republic: The Edge of Balance” is slated for release in April 2025.
