A video game on Steam, released in November 2024, is now available for free to everyone. Unlike many other free games on Steam, this isn’t a temporary offer or a trial. Instead, the price of the game has been permanently reduced to zero. This change wasn’t due to a shift towards a free-to-play model or any modifications in the game itself. The game remains the same, but now it can be played for free.
For gamers using the Steam Deck who are curious to try a free game on Steam, there might be some hurdles. As indicated by the Steam listing of the game, its compatibility with the Steam Deck is “Undetermined.” This doesn’t necessarily mean there are issues with the game on the Steam Deck; it could function flawlessly. However, since it’s unconfirmed, there’s a chance that it may have significant problems on the Steam Deck, or it might not run on the Steam Deck at all.
Regarding the free Steam game at hand, it was initially launched on November 15, 2024, and it was this particular title that marked the debut of independent software company, ABI-DOS Software.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve recently stumbled upon an intriguingly named title – ABI-DOS. From what I’ve gathered, it’s quite the talk of the town among Steam users. The game has garnered an impressive “Very Positive” rating, which is no small feat considering it’s based on a 96% approval rating from over a hundred individual reviews.
The reason for giving away this recently launched product for free is because the creator aims to make it accessible to more people. Despite the sales being somewhat limited, they’ve still managed to turn a profit. However, earning money wasn’t the primary goal during the development phase.
According to the developer, the decision was made following relatively low sales in the initial 45 days after launch. Despite the game being profitable, money wasn’t the main objective (since they have a separate job). Instead, their real passion is designing games similar to Zach, featuring open-ended puzzles and complex technical solutions. Now, their aim is to attract a broader player base. If substantial income isn’t achievable, they prefer to make the game accessible for free so more people can play and appreciate it.
It’s worth mentioning that despite the “free-to-play” tag on Steam, this label might not fully represent the nature of the game. In essence, the game remains the complete, full version it was prior to this classification. Notably, there are no microtransactions included in the game whatsoever.
In this unique game, you’re tasked with developing an exceptionally advanced operating system. You’ll need to grasp the imaginary programming language of a complex machine. Design circuits, manage UBITS (colorful data blocks), and optimize your system for maximum efficiency. Keep in mind that the Administrator is always observing, and he may not be exactly who he appears.
