Kenji Ozawa, who worked as co-director on Visions of Mana last year, has established a new team called Studio Sasanqua after Ouka Studios shut down. Ouka Studios was responsible for creating Visions of Mana, which Square Enix published, but the studio itself was owned by NetEase. Due to reported plans to reduce its operations in Japan, NetEase closed the studio shortly following the release of the RPG. It seems that projects like those from Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator of Yakuza, may also not receive much marketing funding.
In an interview with Automaton, Ozawa shares that he will assume the role of CEO and be accountable if any future ventures by the new studio encounter setbacks. Initially, Studio Sasanqua plans to concentrate on producing smaller-scale projects utilizing Unreal Engine, aiming ultimately to escalate their efforts towards developing console and PC games in the long term.
In the review for Visions of Mana on PS5, we gave it a 7/10. As a throwback to the original Mana series, this game stands strong as a nostalgic experience – however, it falls short of offering something truly new or exceptional. If you can overlook its repetitive narrative and uninteresting characters, you’ll find remnants of classic RPG charm in the beautiful environments to explore and the tough boss battles.
