As a gamer who has seen more than my fair share of reboots, remakes, and sequels, I must admit that the news of Nikyatu Jusu writing and directing a fresh take on The Fly has me intrigued yet cautious. On one hand, the talent behind this project is undeniable – from her work on Suicide by Sunlight to Nanny, it’s clear that Jusu is a force to be reckoned with in the horror genre.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super stoked about the news that Nikyatu Jusu is cooking up something new in the world of The Fly! Unlike a straight remake, it seems this project will be set within the universe of the 1986 classic directed by David Cronenberg. While the connection to our beloved original might be shrouded in mystery for now, I can’t wait to see where they take this exciting venture!
Back in 1957, George Langelaan penned a captivating short story titled “The Fly,” which was later brought to life on the big screen in 1958. Fast forward three decades, and David Cronenberg put his unique spin on it. Now, I’m excitedly waiting for Jusu’s take on this classic tale, though insiders clarify that it’s not exactly a remake. While it might not be a sequel either, the mystery of what’s to come remains intriguing. The team behind the project includes Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping, but details about the cast and crew are still under wraps.
The Fly explores the story of a quirky scientist who develops a method for transporting objects by disintegrating them in one spot before reassembling them elsewhere. Yet, this unruly device doesn’t always put things back together perfectly, and the impulsive scientist struggles to iron out the wrinkles. In an attempt to fix the issues, he decides to teleport himself; unfortunately, a pesky housefly interferes with the experiment, causing their two entities to become fused together.
In Cronenberg’s rendition, Jeff Goldblum portrayed Seth Brundle and Geena Davis took on the role of Veronica Quaife, a journalist. This film is commonly known as the definitive “body horror” movie, and it was highly praised for its realistic special effects by Chris Walas. Compared to the 1958 version featuring Vincent Price, this adaptation took more creative liberties with Langelaan’s original short story.
As a fan eagerly waiting for more from the talented filmmaker Jusu, I’m aware that her upcoming projects might take some time to materialize. With an untitled horror project in development at Universal and Monkeypaw Productions, as well as a sequel to Night of the Living Dead on the horizon for MGM, it seems like she’s got quite a busy schedule ahead. Jusu has been making waves since her 2019 short film Suicide by Sunlight, particularly in the horror genre, and she confirmed to Deadline that her Universal project is an expansion of that very film, focusing on day-walking Black vampires who are shielded from sunlight by their melanin. So, while we might have to wait a bit longer, I’m confident that her future projects will be equally captivating and groundbreaking.
Apart from penning and overseeing the production of “Nanny”, a 2022 psychological horror film that revolves around an undocumented woman from West Africa who works as a nanny for a wealthy child on New York’s Upper West Side, Jusu has yet to reveal any release dates for his upcoming ventures. However, the anticipation for these future projects is steadily growing online. The movie, initially released in cinemas by Blumhouse and Amazon Studios, is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
