It’s time once more for a communal embrace! Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, set to return to the Void, will witness the epic third act showdown between Bob Reynolds (Lewis Pullman) and his inner struggle between light and darkness. CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) coaxes the mentally troubled meth addict to assume the role of the Sentry –– the “Golden Protector of Righteousness” and the lone survivor of Project Sentry. In a swift turn of events, Bob vanquishes the antagonistic Thunderbolts team, an unintended assemblage by Val.
In the role of Bob’s evil counterpart, known as Void, who is causing New York residents to transform into shadows, a group called the Thunderbolts – consisting of Yelena Belova (Black Widow, played by Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier, portrayed by Sebastian Stan), Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian, David Harbour), John Walker (U.S. Agent, Wyatt Russell), and Ava Starr (Ghost, Hannah John-Kamen) – join forces outside the Watchtower (formerly Avengers Tower). They are no longer facing their challenges alone.
When Yelena joins Bob within the Void, she encounters a labyrinth of her most embarrassing recollections, such as her part in the demise of her childhood friend Anya (Alexa Swinton). As she assists Bob in dealing with his traumatic past, Bucky, Alexei, Ava, and John subsequently enter the Void, face their personal histories, and help Bob conquer his inner darkness by means of a healing group hug.
Yelena tells Bob, “You can’t hold it back forever. You can’t keep everything enclosed on your own. No one can.” She continues, “We need to let it out. We need to be together. And even if the Void doesn’t disappear, I guarantee you will feel less burdened.
Pullman describes the Void as something challenging to explain in a new video. He explains that Bob doesn’t have command over it, and once he lets go, it transforms into an extremely powerful entity, somewhat like a wormhole. When one gets sucked into it, it’s like being trapped in a web of endless chambers, reminiscent of the most painful or sorrowful moments in one’s life.
According to production designer Grace Yun, our aim was to create environments that felt authentic. Initially, when you view these spaces, there’s an uncertainty whether it’s a flashback or if you’re immersed in someone’s traumatic memory. Later, you realize it’s the Void spaces. The design is intentional to give a sense of confinement, as if the characters are trapped. Each character is metaphorically entangled within their own trauma memory.
Pullman described the Void spaces as a blend of Michel Gondry’s psychological drama, “Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind,” and Charlie Kaufman’s surreal psycho-drama, “Synecdoche, New York.” Director Jake Schreier also cited “Being John Malkovich” from 1999 as another source of inspiration.
Schreier sought to create something unique, drawing inspiration from filmmakers like Spike Jonze and Jonathan Glazer. Notably, he was inspired by the way they broke through walls in Glazer’s 2002 Levi’s jeans commercial (seen above), as well as the sequence in “Being John Malkovich” where they delve into John Malkovich’s subconscious.
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* — AKA *The New Avengers — is now playing only in theaters.
