New Xbox Games Canceled Before Release Due to Censorship

Two forthcoming Xbox video games were abruptly terminated prior to launch due to allegations of content censorship. Unlike digital marketplaces for PC like Steam, console manufacturers such as PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox typically have strict guidelines that game developers must adhere to in order to publish their games on these platforms. On occasion, this can lead to disagreements where developers claim they’ve been asked to alter specific parts of their games or risk not being able to release them on the consoles. In a recent instance, one developer opted to abandon the Xbox version entirely due to such issues.

City Connection, a developer, recently announced on social media that they’ve decided to scrap the Xbox One versions of Steam-Heart’s Saturn Tribute and Advanced Variable Geo Saturn Tribute. These games initially came out in the ’90s, available on PC, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn systems. Despite their popularity, these titles were considered controversial due to adult content when they were first introduced.

In the decision to relaunch Steam-Heart’s Saturn Tribute and Advanced Variable Geo Saturn Tribute, City Connection recognized that both games contain content considered provocative. Adjustments have been made to each game, facilitating their launch on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or PC platforms; however, Xbox has persistently asked for changes in these games before approving them for release. Rather than agreeing to such extensive modifications, City Connection has chosen to withdraw the games from release on Xbox altogether.

The company has shared that they are cancelling the Xbox releases of both “Steam-Heart’s Saturn Tribute” and “Advanced Variable Geo Saturn Tribute”, originally planned for May 29th. This decision is due to the provocative nature of the games, which are revivals, necessitating adjustments to ensure a consistent experience across multiple platforms. Although each platform has its own standards, the company found it necessary to make substantial changes to the Xbox version’s expression. They acknowledge that this may be disappointing for those eagerly awaiting the Xbox release, and express their apologies.

Looking ahead, City Connection affirms its intention to distribute its games on Xbox systems in the times to come. However, Xbox has yet to comment on this statement from City Connection, a situation that may persist given the relatively small scale of these re-releases. For gamers eager to obtain these updated editions of Steam-Heart’s Saturn Tribute and Advanced Variable Geo Saturn Tribute, they can expect a trouble-free release on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 29th.
