As a dedicated follower of the world of journalism, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mark Spain, a man who not only excelled in his profession but also touched countless lives with his kindness and dedication to community service.
Family, friends and viewers are saying goodbye to Virginia news anchor Mark Spain.
Three weeks following his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, our ABC-affiliated WSET anchor passed away on December 18th, as confirmed by his wife, Lynita Spain. He was 64 years old.
She expressed her deep sorrow by posting on Mark’s Facebook page on December 19th, ‘With great sadness, I announce the passing of my cherished husband.’ The city of Lynchburg, along with our family, lost an individual filled with hope who was deeply committed to his city and advocated for equality, treating others with compassion and respect. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, and a shining beacon of positivity in our community.
Lynita, expressing him as her “initial deep affection,” mentioned that he maintained a positive attitude during his brief fight against illness.
She went on saying, ‘It gives us relief knowing he’s free from pain now.’ Witnessing his struggle against life and the illness was tough, yet he wasn’t fighting alone. Similarly, we weren’t left alone either.
At the tender age of 9, Mark kick-started his journalism journey by delivering newspapers for the Cleveland Press. Later on, he pursued a degree in communications at Cleveland State University. As reported by WSET, he then gained experience working in various cities such as Fort Wayne, Erie, Indianapolis, and back to Cleveland.
In the year 2000, the broadcaster started working at First Coast News station in Jacksonville, Florida, where he stayed for a period of 14 years as per the information provided by the station itself. Later, in 2015, he moved to WSET and was appointed as their lead anchor. This position brought him many recognitions, among which were two awards for Best News Anchor from the Virginia AP Association in 2018 and 2019.
Besides his on-air duties, Mark was also deeply involved in community work. In a tribute posted by WSET, the station recognized his achievements, such as leading a campaign to collect $75,000 for a local media center this summer. The tribute also mentioned his collaborations with organizations like the Salvation Army, Mustaches for Kids, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
Mark leaves behind his spouse and their trio of offspring. In her December 19th entry, Lynita characterized the path before them as “novel and demanding,” yet expressed hope, stating, “God is accompanying us on this journey, offering guidance and protection.
