As a gamer who has been through the evolution of gaming consoles since the dawn of time (or at least since 1987 when Final Fantasy graced our screens), this news about the multi-platform release of future Final Fantasy games feels like a breath of fresh air. The exclusive PlayStation era was great, but it’s high time for the chocobos to spread their wings and explore new pastures.

As a dedicated fan of the Final Fantasy universe, I’m excited to share some intriguing news. Ever since the first game dropped back in 1987, this RPG series has been a constant companion for millions, including myself. With the recent releases of Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it’s clear that even after 37 years, the franchise remains as relevant as ever.

Historically, Final Fantasy has typically launched its games exclusively on PlayStations, starting from PS1 and extending to PS5. However, this traditional pattern seems to be changing. Although some Final Fantasy titles have been released on Xbox systems in the past, they are not frequent occurrences, often appearing after the games have been released for PlayStation. This practice doesn’t align with Square Enix’s future plans.

Moving ahead, Square Enix plans to launch their games concurrently across multiple platforms, including the Final Fantasy series.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that Naoki Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy series, mentioned during an interview with 4Gamer, “We truly hope you enjoy playing it extensively on various platforms.” To make that possible, we’re launching the Xbox Series X|S version concurrently. While Square Enix has plans to release our titles across all platforms in the future, given this is our initial step, we extend a warm invitation to Xbox users to immerse themselves in our game as well!

The phrase “more and more” implies exceptions, possibly referring to exemptions that were granted prior to the implementation of Square Enix’s new strategy for Final Fantasy. However, it seems Square Enix is planning a significant shift with Final Fantasy, aiming to establish it as a multi-platform franchise at last. Whether this transition will indeed occur remains to be seen.

For Xbox-using Final Fantasy fans, it’s exciting news that more games are coming, but it seems unlikely that the third part of the ongoing remake of Final Fantasy 7 will be included, as Sony has likely secured the entire trilogy exclusively for PlayStation consoles. However, this prediction was likely made before Square Enix announced their recent strategy change.
