Next Mass Effect Isn’t Going to Be Ready for a Long, Long Time, Suggests BioWare Vet

Since BioWare has essentially wrapped up Dragon Age: The Veilguard (though there may be occasional updates, but nothing’s been mentioned for months), their focus has shifted squarely towards the next Mass Effect title. However, it seems this new project is likely still several years down the line.

According to his recent video posted on his personal YouTube channel, long-time BioWare and Dragon Age contributor Mark Darrah (currently working as a consultant for The Veilguard) shared that the upcoming Mass Effect game is still in its early stages, with both staffing and strategic planning yet to be fully established.

According to Darrah, as reported by GamesRadar, Mass Effect isn’t prepared for an abrupt shift to a team of 250-300 people working on it. The reason behind this is that the new Mass Effect wasn’t in development alongside The Veilguard, unlike previous BioWare projects where teams could transition from one game to another more easily.

Essentially, the development of Mass Effect hasn’t moved beyond the planning stages yet. They won’t be able to hire staff until the project leaders have clearly defined the project’s goals, deadlines, and other necessary details.

For now, according to Darrah, the team will have to seek alternative tasks within the broader Electronic Arts (EA) company. In the interim, the Mass Effect team is busy determining what the next installment of Mass Effect will be, structuring their approach, and preparing to expand into a larger workforce.

The announcement for the latest Mass Effect game dates back to November 2020, which is more than four years ago. In April 2022, it was revealed that the project was just starting out in its development stage by BioWare. It’s reasonable to think that the challenging development process of Dragon Age: The Veilguard may have contributed to delaying the progress on the next Mass Effect.

Hopefully, there will be some good news regarding Mass Effect this year; however, don’t anticipate any significant developments from it in the distant future.

As a dedicated fan of the Mass Effect series, I can’t help but ponder about the upcoming installment and BioWare as a whole. From where I stand, I see a team with immense potential and a rich history, but also one that seems to be grappling with the pressures of delivering a satisfying conclusion to such an epic saga.

In terms of a release date prediction, it’s always hard to say for certain, but considering the scope of the project and the complexities involved in wrapping up a narrative as vast as Mass Effect’s, I fear we might be waiting a while longer. My best guess would be somewhere in late 2023 or even early 2024. However, I sincerely hope I’m wrong and that we get to return to the galaxy at an earlier date! Keep your fingers crossed, fellow fans!
