“As a long-time gamer and anime fan, I can’t help but feel elated seeing Jamaal Williams, a successful NFL running back, proudly embracing his nerdy hobbies in public. Growing up, I too faced the stigma of being a Black nerd and was often ridiculed for my love of anime and gaming. But just like Jamaal, I held on to these passions as they provided me with comfort and a sense of community during difficult times.

Jamaal Williams, a prominent Black football player in the NFL, is known for his passion for nerdy pastimes. He has long been an enthusiast of hobbies like collecting Pokemon cards or enjoying anime. At Anime Expo 2024, ComicBook interviewed Williams about how geek culture has gained wider acceptance among young people today. Williams shared his personal story of embracing anime and using his fandom as motivation to reach the NFL.

As a 29-year-old back myself, I can attest that my journey hasn’t been without its fair share of challenges. However, I’ve found solace in my favorite anime shows like Naruto. These series have become comforting constants in my life, providing me with escape and joy during difficult times.

As a gamer, I often find myself in awe of the numerous individuals who have gained significant recognition, from famous musicians like Megan Thee Stallion to athletes such as Noah Lyles – including yours truly. It’s incredible how expressive and passionate people are about anime these days! Let me tell you, being a Black nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. We all deserve to share our love for anime with everyone, regardless of what we do in our daily lives. I may be a gamer, but I am proudly embracing my passion and letting the world know about it.

I find it amusing now looking back, since my friends in high school would tease me mercilessly. “Hey, don’t you remember how you used to run around with your hands hidden behind your back?” They’d say this every day, but I made sure they never forgot. I stood firm, refusing to change who I was just because I played football. My friends respected me for it, and I wasn’t going to let them push me into becoming something I wasn’t. Anime brought me comfort and focus during those challenging times, serving as my personal sanctuary. It was my escape, my peaceful haven.

Reflecting on my past experiences, I believe that certain aspects of my childhood, though seemingly insignificant or even positive at the time, have significantly contributed to my personal growth and resilience. These experiences were never detrimental to my career or resulted in any trouble. Instead, they provided valuable opportunities for me to face adversity head-on and hone my ability to stay calm under pressure.
