As a devoted fan of Johnny “Johnny Hockey” Gaudreau, I find myself utterly heartbroken and stunned by this unthinkable tragedy. The news of his untimely demise has left an indelible void not only on the Columbus Blue Jackets but in the entire hockey community.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are mourning the loss of an all-star player.
It has been confirmed that Johnny Gaudreau, a player on an Ohio hockey team, and his brother Matthew Gaudreau have tragically passed away. Johnny was 31 years old, while Matthew was 29.
“The Columbus Blue Jackets are profoundly shaken and saddened by this unthinkable catastrophe,” read Johnny’s team’s statement on August 30th. “Johnny was not just an exceptional hockey player, but above all a devoted husband, father, son, sibling, and friend.”
According to authorities, the brothers were bicycling on a secluded New Jersey road around 10:00 PM on August 29th. They were hit head-on by a vehicle. Remarkably, the driver remained at the accident site.
“We offer our deepest condolences to Meredith, Noa, and Johnny’s parents, as well as their family, friends, and the Blue Jackets community, following the unexpected passing of Johnny and Matt. Johnny brought immense joy to the game, a feeling that was evident whenever he was on the ice.”
Johnny, who spent 11 seasons playing hockey for both the Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames in the NHL, recently became a father to a son named Johnny Edward Gaudreau with his wife Meredith. They also have a 23-month-old daughter named Noa.
Matthew is remembered by his wife of two years, Madeline Gaudreau.
Born in New Jersey, the Gaudreau brothers spent their lives playing on various hockey teams, eventually becoming teammates at Boston College.
As Matthew wrote in a Nov. 2013 Instagram post of the pair, “First NCAA college game together.”
Meanwhile, Matthew was part of the Worcester Railers team, which is an affiliate of the New York Islanders in the ECHL, during 2022. On the other hand, Johnny carried on playing hockey until his unfortunate demise. His wife honored the conclusion of the previous NHL season on Instagram in April with a heartfelt post saying, “We adore our guy so much!”
Without a doubt, the impact “Johnny Hockey,” as he was fondly known, has made on his sport is truly substantial.
Reflecting on the profound influence Johnny had on our organization and the sport, it’s hard not to be in awe of the indelible mark he left on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Upon his arrival two years ago, Johnny wholeheartedly embraced our community, and Columbus warmly reciprocated with open arms. We will deeply mourn his absence, and as a family, we will do everything within our power to stand by his loved ones and each other during this difficult time.
