As a seasoned gamer and long-time Marvel fanatic, I can’t help but feel my heart pounding with anticipation as I delve into the intricate web of events unfolding within the Ultimate Universe. The upcoming “Ultimate Universe: One Year In” promises to be a thrilling ride, offering both newcomers and veterans an enticing entryway into this captivating universe.
In the final months of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe’s first year, a standalone issue will present readers with the character Nick Fury. However, there remains uncertainty about where his loyalties reside. The one-shot comic Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1 concludes the initial year of the new Ultimate Universe and paves the way for another year of storytelling within this universe. Two fresh characters are set to debut: Ultimate Wolverine and Nick Fury. The creative team behind Ultimate Wolverine, Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio, have shared a sneak peek of their comic, while Deniz Camp, the writer for Ultimates, and artist Jonas Scharf offer insights into Nick Fury’s character.
In their latest release, Marvel unveiled cover art and sneak peeks for Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1. The secret role of Nick Fury within the Maker’s realm is unveiled, suggesting a collaboration with the villainous version of Reed Richards. However, given his history as an accomplished spy, it’s also possible that Fury is operating undercover for the Ultimates. As the return of the Maker looms, the Maker’s Council gathers to deliberate over the escalating presence of superheroes who aim to restore hope in their troubled universe. Instead of leading S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury now commands a helicarrier displaying an open palm as its emblem. This symbol might represent H.A.N.D. or another sinister group. The final scene in the narrative shows Fury attending a meeting with the Maker’s Council.
The other half of the story reveals the Maker’s ultimate weapon, the Winter Soldier, aka Ultimate Wolverine. The story serves as a prelude to Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio’s Ultimate Wolverine, the newest ongoing Ultimate series launching this January.
For the covers, you’ll find a collection of variant designs featuring different artists from the regular Ultimate series. These include Marco Checchetto (from Ultimate Spider-Man), Stefano Caselli (Ultimate Black Panther), Peach Momoko (Ultimate X-Men), and Dike Ruan (Ultimates). Additionally, there’s a chilling portrayal of the Maker by renowned comic book creator Frank Miller. Moreover, Josemaria Casanovas is contributing one-sixth of an epic connecting cover that will span across all Ultimate titles. Lastly, Alessandro Cappuccio, future series artist for Wolverine, has created a variant cover teasing the character’s first appearance in a spoiler design.

In ‘Ultimate Universe: One Year In’, I aimed for a few straightforward objectives: First, provide a welcoming introduction to the Ultimate Universe for newcomers; second, offer something special for long-term readers who have been yearning for more interconnected tales among the Ultimate series; and third, establish foundations for the upcoming stories as we move towards the reappearance of the Maker. This story will not only be complete and fulfilling in one issue but also from the villains’ perspective, making it dark, somewhat ruthless, yet visually stunning thanks to Jonas Scharf.
The covers for Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1 are below. The issue goes on sale December 11th.
