Nicola Coughlan, well-known for her performances in Derry Girls and Bridgerton, has been nominated for her first British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) in the category of Best Female Performance in a Comedy for Big Mood. In simpler terms, she’s been recognized with a BAFTA nomination for her comedic acting in Big Mood!
In this role, she portrays Maggie, a character living with bipolar disorder. This condition brings about episodes of extreme highs, or mania, and deep lows, or depression. For a decade, she’s maintained a close friendship with Eddie (played by Lydia West in ‘It’s a Sin’), but lately, their bond has faced some tension.
In the process of filming Big Mood, Coughlan simultaneously worked on the third installment of Bridgerton for half of her time. She portrays Penelope Featherington, who unveils her hidden persona as Lady Whistledown, the penner of an anonymous gossip column, to high society.
Additionally, the series includes numerous passionate moments featuring Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), a man she’s had feelings for quite some time and ultimately ends up wedded to. Intriguingly, Coughlan posted an Instagram picture in June 2024, showcasing them both standing beside a piece of broken furniture from one of their steamy on-screen scenes!
In my opinion, having an intimacy coordinator like Lizzy Talbot, who graced the set of Bridgerton with her exceptional skills, significantly empowers performers during intimate scenes. I can’t stress enough how vital and impressive they are in ensuring a safe, comfortable, and authentic experience for everyone involved.
She commented: “It’s quite intriguing, as some older generation actors express confusion about the need for intimacy coordinators. This isn’t meant to criticize past practices or to embarrass anyone, but having them around certainly provides a greater sense of safety and control.
The situation feels manageable, giving you control over how things unfold. It’s a confident experience, without the uncertainty or fear of unexpected outcomes. When you step off the set, you feel empowered and positive, which is how everyone should finish their workday. The boundaries are clear, and there’s no sense of danger.
It’s expected that we won’t see the fourth season of Bridgerton until 2026, but fear not! The story will revolve around Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and his romantic journey with Sophie Baek (portrayed by Yerin Ha). Their paths cross at Violet Bridgerton’s (Ruth Gemmell) masquerade ball.
This year, we’ll manage to see Simon Farnaby’s movie version of “The Magic Faraway Tree,” based on the children’s books by Enid Blyton, featuring Coughlan.
She will play the role of Silky, the woodland fairy, opposite fellow BAFTA nominee Jessica Gunning, along with Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy in the cast.
