Nicolas Cage Isn’t the First Superhero Actor to Play Spider-Man Noir

As a gamer who has been entrenched in the world of comic books and superheroes for as long as I can remember, I must say that the upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series on Amazon is nothing short of exhilarating! Growing up with Spider-Man Noir as a fan favorite in Sony’s animated films, seeing Nicolas Cage breathe life into this gritty, noir version was a delight. But then came the surprising revelation that Milo Ventimiglia had voiced an animated Spider-Noir years before!

The upcoming live-action TV series from Amazon, titled “Spider-Noir”, stars Nicolas Cage as the character Spider-Man Noir. This character gained significant popularity in Sony’s animated films known as the Spider-Verse. It’s worth noting that Cage’s portrayal of Spider-Man Noir in the Academy Award-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has helped bring this character into mainstream consciousness. However, it’s important to mention that Nicolas Cage isn’t the first renowned actor to play Spider-Man Noir on screen!

Who Played Spider-Man Noir Before Nic Cage?

Milo Ventimiglia, known for his roles in “This Is Us” and “Heroes”, lent his voice to an animated Spider-Man Noir in the “Ultimate Spider-Man” series (2012-2017). He appeared in the extended storyline “The Spider-Verse (Pt. 2)”, working alongside and sometimes clashing with Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Drake Bell) from the primary universe. Spider-Man Noir was part of a group of Spider-Man characters (Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Girl, Spider-Ham, Spyder-Knight, Miles Morales), who were pursued by Norman Osborn/Green Goblin to have their DNA stolen. This would allow Norman to transform into the “Spider-Goblin”. The animated adaptation was influenced by contemporary Spider-Man comics and paved the way for the Spider-Verse concept to be developed into a blockbuster film a few years later.

As a diehard gamer, I’ve always been a fan of hidden surprises in games, and Ventimiglia’s Spider-Man Noir was just that when he popped up in Ultimate Spider-Man – little did I know that the more comic-authentic version (inspired by a “Noir Universe” mimicking 1930s Film Noir) would become the heart of this live-action Spider-Noir series. With Nic Cage’s quirky charm, fans are already on board with Spider-Man/Peter Parker Noir’s peculiar tone and gestures – if Amazon MGM Studios can convince us of that entire world, Sony’s live-action Spider-Verse takes a significant leap forward. Since Spider-Noir is the first (and most prominent) TV series in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which has seen its fair share of development hurdles (like Silk: Spider Society), this could be a game-changer for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

In this production, Spider-Noir will share the screen with Lamorne Morris, famously known for his role on New Girl, who portrays Robbie Robertson. Joining him are Lukas Haas, recognized from Inception, Cameron Britton of Mindhunter, Cary Christopher of Days of Our Lives, Michael Kostroff from Luke Cage, Scott MacArthur of The Righteous Gemstones, Joe Massingill from Barry, Whitney Rice of Jury Duty, and Amanda Schull, a Suits alumna. All these talented individuals will appear in recurring roles within the storyline.

The Emmy-winning director Harry Bradbeer (known for ‘Fleabag’ and ‘Killing Eve’) takes charge of directing the series and will oversee the production of the initial two episodes. On the other hand, Oren Uziel (‘The Lost City’, ’22 Jump Street’) and Steve Lightfoot (‘Marvel’s The Punisher’, ‘Shantaram’), work together as co-showrunners and executive producers. They have also collaborated with the Oscar-winning trio behind ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ – Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal – in developing this series.

Spider-Noir is currently in production. It will air on MGM+ in 2025.
