As a lifestyle expert who has had the privilege of observing and analyzing numerous celebrities’ lives, I must say that the loss of a parent is undeniably one of the most challenging moments anyone can face, regardless of fame or fortune. Nicole Kidman‘s heartfelt tribute to her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, during the Venice Film Festival serves as a poignant reminder of the indelible impact our parents have on shaping our lives.
Nicole Kidman is mourning the loss of her mother Janelle Ann Kidman.
The actress shared the news of her mother’s passing at the age of 84, during a speech where Halina Rejn, who worked with her in ‘Babygirl’, read the statement on stage, as she received the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival on September 6.
Today, I reached Venice only to learn moments later that my remarkable, courageous mother, Nicole Kidman, had passed away. I’m stunned and must now return to my loved ones.
The statement continued, “But this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me. I’m beyond grateful that I that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”
The cause of Janelle’s death was not made public.
Over the past few years, Nicole’s mother, a former nursing instructor, experienced various health complications. Last year, during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the award-winning actress revealed she traveled back to Australia, her family’s homeland, to provide support for her ailing mother.
In a January interview with NPR, he explained that their main purpose for being there was to look after his 57-year-old mother, and to keep her company with her grandchildren.
Nicole mentioned that they all went to the Art Gallery of New South Wales as a family. Despite the omicron variant being prevalent across the nation, she managed to arrange an after-hours visit for them and take her there to see the Matisse exhibit. For a mother who nurtured my love for the arts, it was like a soothing balm.
The actress commented, “I’m fortunate enough to see the world through my mom’s eyes, who is 81. This perspective is incredibly valuable to me right now because she’s sharp and fully cognizant. All her mental faculties are intact, making it a captivating experience that she hasn’t lost any memory.
Nicole Kidman’s parents, Antony Kidman (who was a psychologist), have consistently been among her most enthusiastic supporters throughout her acting career. On occasion, they even joined her at high-profile events such as the 2003 Oscars, where they cheered her on from the audience as she received her first Academy Award for the movie “The Hours.
Following the death of her father at age 75 in 2014, Nicole found solace and strength from her husband, Keith Urban, and their daughters, Sunday Rose (who is now 16) and Faith Margaret (aged 13).
The actress shared during an interview on CBS Sunday Mornings in 2016 that she frantically phoned him while he was moments away from performing on stage. Overwhelmed, he abandoned his performance, boarded a flight, and returned within six hours. As soon as he arrived, he scooped her up and essentially supported her emotionally for the following two weeks.
The actress remarked, “My kids were saying, ‘Everything will be okay, Mom.’ It’s fascinating how children perceive situations, as they reassured me by saying, ‘You still have your mommy.’
In 1985, while Nicole was just 17 years old and making her mark as the star of “Moulin Rouge,” Janelle, who had a strong connection with her, fought against breast cancer.
In 1997, Nicole shared with the Sydney Morning Herald, “It was incredibly difficult to witness my mother enduring such distress.” This experience made me realize the harsh realities of mortality, pain, and suffering. From that moment on, I became resolute about offering support, participating, and in some way contributing to alleviating these hardships.
After their divorce, Nicole and her former husband Tom Cruise contributed funds to establish the Women’s Reproductive Cancer Center at UCLA. In 2023, a dozen years following their split, the actress donated along with Keith to support clinical trials for breast cancer treatments at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville.
Besides Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, as well as the actress’ younger sibling Antonia Kidman, Janelle is also mourned by her six offspring, along with Bella Kidman Cruise, aged 31, and Connor Cruise, who is 29 – children from Nicole and Tom.
