As a movie buff with a keen interest in tech-thrillers and a not-so-secret past as a hacker myself (albeit one who never quite made it to the big leagues), I find Nightsleeper to be an intriguing watch. The show masterfully weaves a tale of suspense, keeping viewers on their toes while delving into the ethics and consequences of technology.

Overnight train travelers are left in suspense as NightSleeper remains tight-lipped about the mysterious hacker who’s seized control of the train journeying from Glasgow to London, effectively kidnapping the passengers for a digital ransom.
On BBC One, the show will be broadcast every Sunday and Monday. For those who prefer to watch early, all six episodes are already accessible for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
In episode 4, it becomes evident that Abby Aysgarth from the National Cyber Security Centre (played by Alexandra Roach) is under suspicion, due to a surprising development in the case’s progression.
In episode 4 of Nightsleeper, it’s uncovered that the very code employed to breach the UK railway system was originally crafted by Abby in her rebellious past as an unlawful hacker. This past eventually brought her to the attention of the government agency, leading to her recruitment.
Howell pointed out that a significant characteristic of this character is her tendency to be a high-achieving, perfectionistic individual. This likely means she subtly takes pride in her code being validated as successful in real-world applications.
He commented, “She authored a groundbreaking piece of code, unparalleled by anyone else globally.” She’s leading her domain, but unfortunately, that code is currently being utilized for purposes completely contrary to its intended use.
There seems to be a bit of excitement, like ‘It functions!’ However, Abby’s school prefect might feel a sinking sensation since it’s ‘Yes, I accomplished it, but it’s not my hands testing it anymore. It’s already out there and it’s gone.’
Later on, Howell started to make connections between the plot and actual technological progressions, emphasizing that frequently significant improvements are introduced globally without much consideration for the potential outcomes.
He believes that the world of technology, particularly areas such as AI development for deep fakes and facial recognition, has a tendency to rapidly expand beyond our initial comprehension once it’s released.
It’s concerning to see technologies originally developed for gaming or apps being used today to monitor individuals returning from protests. The question arises: How did we evolve into a point where this is happening?
