Nightsleeper star “wasn’t surprised” by character’s episode 5 reveal

As I delve deeper into the captivating world of Nightsleeper, I find myself increasingly captivated by the enigmatic character of Tobi, portrayed masterfully by Gabriel Howell. His life experience, filled with intrigue and deception, mirrors the complexities of the narrative itself.

*Warning: Spoilers for Nightsleeper ahead!*

In episode 5 of Nightsleeper, another surprising revelation unfolds when it’s discovered that an individual from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) team has committed a significant violation of professional ethics.

In the next-to-last chapter, the focus shifts towards Acting Director Abby Aysgarth (played by Alexandra Roach) when she becomes a prime suspect for the creation of the code responsible for hacking the train.

Evidence suggesting her as the orchestrator of the attack becomes stronger when a device belonging to the National Cyber Security Center containing sensitive data was discovered at her residence, placing her in a rather precarious situation.

Episode 5 of Nightsleeper uncovers a twist: The laptop from the NCSC, seemingly incriminating Abby in the hackjob incident that was initially found at her home, had actually been secretly taken from the office by Tobi.

During the filming of the series, Howell found himself in the same position as the audience at home, initially only given scripts for the first three episodes. However, he didn’t express surprise when he discovered his character was involved in some mischief.

He mentioned: “For a while, I found myself questioning, ‘Could it be him? Did he commit the act?’ It was quite delightful for me to solve the last three mysteries, much like an audience member, and experience the thrill of discovering the solution.

Howell added, ‘It became clearer to me, it seems. Tobi seems to understand better when faced with less complex matters. He’s not privy to confidential information, which is what stimulates his intellect. I believe he’s feeling restless and maybe that’s why he’s up to mischief when idle.’

The actor explained further that Tobi’s wrongdoings reflect his admiration for ex-hacker Abby and her unconventional partner Paul Peveril, portrayed by David Threlfall. He aims to adopt the rebellious traits that have defined their professional paths.

According to Howell, it seems he’s aiming for this specific thing. He aspires to be like Abby, a rule-breaker, and that’s what he desires. However, he can only achieve this aspiration by acquiring items that aren’t his to possess, as there are tales of Abby doing similar things.

I’ve developed immense respect for Tobi, as his actions have given me a deeper insight into who he is. I find myself advocating strongly for him. To be honest, I genuinely like him. His actions don’t suggest malicious intent to me – he doesn’t fit the mold of a villain or someone cunningly calculative in a harmful way.

Howell stated: “He’s genuinely fond of it and the game itself, so I don’t believe he ever tries to deceive. However, when he gets caught, he seems surprised, as if saying, ‘Oh, I didn’t realize I did that.’ It’s almost like a clever strategy, which is intriguing.

Nightsleeper is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
