If you’re not familiar with it, the 1993 film “Ninja Scroll” was created collaboratively by Toho and Studio Madhouse. The story revolves around a roaming ninja named Jubei, who encounters numerous lethal battles and romantic entanglements in his mission to save Japan from a sinister scheme hatched by the villain, Gemma. Originally, the film was a standalone production for its initial plot, but the franchise expanded with a “Ninja Scroll” television series in 2003. To commemorate the movie’s thirty-year anniversary, it reappeared in North American theaters this past September, demonstrating that “Ninja Scroll” remains relevant and popular even after several decades.

HIDIVE recently shared a detailed summary to give fans a glimpse into the violent ninja storyline. The synopsis reads, “Jubei believes he’s saved a young ninja woman and that’s the end of it. However, he soon realizes this is just the start of their adventure. As they team up, they delve into the mysterious deaths of an entire village, which leads them to discover a terrifying conspiracy involving demons! As they get closer to the truth, the demonic forces will go to extreme lengths to silence Jubei and his partner permanently!
Will Ninja Scroll Return?
Although fans of the anime film “Ninja Scroll” may cherish it dearly, you might find it astonishing to learn that since its 2003 television series, there hasn’t been any further development of the storyline. Regrettably, you might be disappointed to know that Studio Madhouse (known for productions like “One-Punch Man” and “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”) had planned to revive Jubei with a sequel titled “Ninja Scroll Burst”. This was intended as a three-episode short animation. A script for the sequel was even finished, but unfortunately, Madhouse encountered difficulties in securing investors to finance this project. Consequently, the project is currently on hold.
Remarkably similar to “One Piece” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” as well as other renowned anime series, a live-action adaptation of “Ninja Scroll” was once in the works at Warner Bros. Back in 2008, it was even announced that Leonardo DiCaprio would be producing this project. However, much like the sequel plans for Madhouse’s productions, this film never materialized and remains undeveloped. Given the ongoing success of live-action anime adaptations in the entertainment industry, there’s a possibility we could witness a live-action version of “Ninja Scroll’s” Jubei character in our lifetime.
