The collaboration between Nintendo and LEGO continues to generate sets that captivate fans, ranging from young to old. This year has already seen the introduction of Mario Kart and Animal Crossing sets, and now there’s a significant release scheduled for October. Recently, Nintendo shared a short teaser trailer suggesting a LEGO version of the original Game Boy, though images of the completed set have yet to be revealed. The video showcased only the buttons and D-pad, leaving little else to the imagination. Regrettably, this isn’t much information to work with, but there’s potential for more details from Nintendo or LEGO in the coming days (or perhaps from leaks).
As a die-hard Nintendo enthusiast, I’ve been buzzing with excitement over the latest releases announced today. However, my fellow fans and I are a bit disheartened because neither of these announcements concern the long-awaited “Nintendo Switch 2.” Although we eagerly anticipate an official reveal before the end of March, it seems Nintendo isn’t quite ready to unveil their new console just yet. In the meantime, they’re keeping us entertained with other tantalizing news like the upcoming LEGO Game Boy set! You can catch a sneak peek at the teaser trailer in the Instagram post below.
This LEGO set is the second one inspired by a Nintendo gaming system, following the release of another set modeled after the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 2020. That NES-themed set included a playable version of the classic Super Mario Bros. game. As for the upcoming LEGO Game Boy, it’s unclear if it will come with a playable cartridge, but there are numerous games that could work well. The most likely candidate would be Pokemon Red and Blue, considering their strong connection to the system. However, securing this license might be challenging due to The Pokemon Company’s partnership with Mega Bloks. Another potential choice is Tetris, but that could also lead to licensing complications since Nintendo doesn’t own the rights to the game.
If the rumored LEGO Game Boy indeed comes with its own cartridge slot, it’s plausible that classic games like Super Mario Land 2 could be among the options. Given that the original Super Mario Land isn’t highly regarded, Super Mario Land 2 would be a prudent selection. Additionally, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is another potential game for this hypothetical LEGO Game Boy. Since LEGO has only released one Zelda set to date, this Game Boy set could provide an opportunity to expand the use of the license. Furthermore, it’s feasible that LEGO might design a set with multiple cartridge build options, similar to how their Zelda set offers designs based on Ocarina of Time or Breath of the Wild, catering to individual builder preferences.
With such an extensive and high-quality collection of games for the Game Boy, there’s plenty of potential for a LEGO set inspired by this iconic system. As for the screen design, it remains to be seen whether it will replicate the original olive green hue from launch, the black and white look from the Pocket era, or the color display we saw with the Game Boy Color. At present, there are many unknown factors, but fans of Nintendo can only hope that the end result will make it a must-have item!
