As a gamer with decades of Nintendo-fueled memories etched into my gaming DNA, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia every time I see those adorable little Mii characters pop up on screen. From the Wii era to the current Switch generation, these customizable avatars have been a constant companion, adding a touch of personalization to my gaming experiences.
Over the past few years, Nintendo has been using Miis less frequently compared to before. Although they occasionally show up, they aren’t as prevalent as they once were. However, Mii designs are set to make a comeback in an intriguing manner when the Nintendo Museum opens in Japan this October. To attend, participants must register with their Nintendo Account, and each museum ticket will feature an image of the account-assigned Mii. This is a thoughtful touch that adds a personalized feel, and it also records the participant’s scores on their account.
It’s quite logical that the Museum employs Nintendo Accounts. Despite uncertainty about the next video game system following Nintendo Switch, it was disclosed last year that this upcoming system will still rely on the existing Nintendo Account infrastructure. By doing so, Nintendo appears to be unifying all user-specific experiences, such as high scores at the Nintendo Museum, save data for Switch and mobile games, and even personalized Mii characters. This integrated approach aims to connect various gaming experiences under one user account.
Initially, Mii characters debuted during the Nintendo Wii era, prominently featured in the game “Wii Sports“. Since then, these characters have continued to be part of the Nintendo universe, appearing in games such as “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate“. Over time, they’ve shifted from a main focus to a secondary one; for instance, in “Nintendo Switch Sports“, players have the option to use Mii characters, but the primary choice is a fresh kind of avatar.
Is it possible that we might witness Mii characters appearing more frequently in different locations? That’s unlikely. However, it’s impressive to note how these characters have managed to survive for Nintendo over such a long period, especially considering that many may not have predicted this longevity at the onset of the Wii era!
