Nintendo “Considered Giving Up” on Mario & Luigi Series

As a lifelong fan of the Mario & Luigi series, I must admit that the release of Brothership last month was like a breath of fresh air after a long wait. Nine years is an eternity in video game time, and I had almost given up hope on seeing another entry in this beloved RPG series.

Previously, the game titled “Mario & Luigi: Brothership” made its debut on the Nintendo Switch last month, marking a return to the RPG series after a long wait of nine years. Despite some fans believing that the series had concluded, this wasn’t so, and the response to the new game has generally been positive. Interestingly, it appears that not just the fans but also the developers had doubts about the continuation of the series. In a recent post on Nintendo’s official website under the “Ask the Developer” section, producer Akira Otani disclosed that discussions surrounding the series had persisted since the release of “Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam” in 2015. However, it seemed that Nintendo struggled to find a balance between their aspirations for the project.

Otani expressed that we aimed to create something fresh yet true to the original Mario & Luigi games, compatible with hardware updates. It wasn’t straightforward to strike this balance simultaneously… We experimented with numerous approaches, but there was a moment when we doubted if we could continue producing games in the series and even contemplated discontinuation.

Otani doesn’t delve into details, but many challenges with the Mario & Luigi series arose following AlphaDream’s closure. AlphaDream had been responsible for every game in the series since “Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga,” but the company went bankrupt in 2019. Otani explained that eventually they turned to Acquire, as he believed Acquire would be a good match for the series due to their ability to create both action and RPG games, based on their work with “Tenchu” and “Octopath Traveler.

In the same interview, Haruyuki Ohashi, the director, expressed his and Acquire’s team’s enthusiasm about working on the series, stating they were eager to learn various skills, ranging from technical details to game design, by collaborating with Nintendo. As a new developer, there was a wish from Nintendo to preserve the classic atmosphere of their previous games. To achieve this, Nintendo invited developers who had worked on earlier Mario & Luigi installments.

It seems Nintendo along with Acquire have made considerable efforts to resurrect the Mario & Luigi series, but its long-term fate is uncertain. If Mario & Luigi: Brothership performs well financially, it could potentially reduce the gap between subsequent installments. However, whether or not Acquire will reappear is a point of speculation. Acquire is under Kadokawa Corporation’s ownership, and Sony has expressed an interest in acquiring this company. This potential takeover might pose challenges for future collaborations with Nintendo, but the exact outcome remains uncertain.
