Supporters of Nintendo are voicing their annoyances about an ongoing problem they suspect originated from games on the Nintendo Wii. Prior to the Nintendo Switch outshining it as Nintendo’s highest-selling home console, the Wii held this title. During its lifetime, the Nintendo Wii was sold over 100 million times worldwide and boasted a remarkable collection of games such as Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Despite the Wii being fondly remembered by most Nintendo enthusiasts, a growing number are recognizing that it might have instigated one persistent irritation.
Recently, I jumped into a discussion on Reddit about the latest Nintendo Switch game, “Mario & Luigi: Brothership.” Initially, my anticipation for this title was through the roof. However, after diving in, I must admit that it fell short of my expectations, mainly because it over-explained things unnecessarily. This excessive exposition left me feeling like a kid being lectured, which was a significant turn-off and ultimately led me to abandon “Brothership.
In various discussions on Reddit, it was noted that many users share a common frustration about Nintendo games outside of Mario & Luigi: Brothership series starting to feel overly guide-heavy or “hand-holdy”. The Nintendo Wii is often cited as the console where this trend began. Although not every subsequent game from Nintendo has been like this, some newer titles still struggle with this issue.
In simpler terms, TransitionInfamous86 pointed out that the Wii revolutionized gaming by being extremely inclusive, but this aspect seems to have been overlooked over time. He noted that playing Mario Galaxy 2 feels overly guided compared to the original, and he wonders why a sequel would need such guidance when players should already be familiar with the game. However, he praises the Switch’s early games for teaching new players effectively without interfering too much. But he also mentions that Nintendo occasionally re-emerges with overly helpful guidance in their games.
If it’s true that the Wii marked a shift towards more guidance from Nintendo for players, that makes perfect sense. Among Nintendo consoles, the Wii appealed not just to dedicated fans but also to casual gamers in large numbers. Games such as Wii Sports, Just Dance, and Wii Fit became particularly successful on this platform due to its broad audience. Given this wide-ranging casual player base, it seems plausible that Nintendo opted to offer more help in games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario Galaxy 2 than they might have otherwise.
In recent Nintendo games like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “Super Mario Maker 2”, players have been granted a significant amount of creative control. However, with the anticipated unveiling and release of the Switch 2 later this year, let’s cross our fingers that Nintendo will move even further from the current gameplay format that appears to be losing favor among fans.
