As a gamer who’s been around the block since the days of the NES, I can hardly believe my eyes! Here we are, nearly four decades later, and Nintendo is still dishing out new games for its iconic system. Donny and Tami, our beloved heroes from Possum Hollow, are back for another round in Haunted Halloween ’87. I remember playing the original games on my old NES, and now I’m getting a chance to revisit this spooky town with these characters I grew up with.
1983 marked the debut of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in Japan, but it didn’t make its way to the US until 1985. Next year, the console will be entering its middle-aged phase for American gamers. Over the years since its release, we’ve seen the SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Switch, and soon the Switch 2, as well as handheld devices like the Game Boy and DS. Despite the passage of time since the initial launch of the NES, a new game is still being developed for it.
The upcoming NES game, “Haunted Halloween ’87,” follows suit from Retrotainment, a company that has already launched two other NES games. In essence, it’s the third installment in the NES trilogy they have initiated.
At this point, it’s undetermined when the game will debut on NES and if it will appear on other platforms as well. However, since the game is currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, additional information may be revealed soon. For the past year, Donny and Tami have been perfecting their fighting abilities, indulging in cheeseburgers and preparing for the resurrection of Harry on Halloween night. Back in ’85, they were merely children who miraculously survived the terrors of Halloween. In ’86, they encountered Harry unexpectedly, but managed to press on by discovering fragments of an ancient map that helped them enhance their fighting techniques. This year on Halloween, they won’t be taken aback – they’ll be armed and ready to retaliate against Harry when he returns. However, there’s one obstacle… The Witch.
According to the game’s introduction, Donny and Tami will navigate unfamiliar areas of their cherished but troublesome town, Possum Hollow, in 1987. They’ll face challenges in locations such as the sewage plant, junkyard, trailer park, and numerous others; even parts of Olde Opossum Hollow that were believed to have been long forgotten.
