Nintendo GameCube Game Gets Surprise Update Nearly 20 Years After Release

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can attest to the rollercoaster ride that is the world of video games. The recent update for the cult-classic GameCube game, Killer7, has taken me on yet another unexpected journey. Having played this gem back in 2005 when it first graced the Nintendo GameCube, I was thrilled to see it resurface on PC a few years ago.

A game for the Nintendo GameCube, which is nearly two decades old, has unexpectedly gotten a fresh update. Over the last ten years, several GameCube games that were once stuck on this platform have been revived or moved to newer hardware. Games such as Metroid Prime, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Beyond Good & Evil, Super Mario Sunshine, Resident Evil 4, and Baten Kaitos 1 & 2 have all been revived on new systems in recent times. Now, a game that was transferred to PC back in 2018 has received an unanticipated update with no prior notice.

Recently, an update for the Steam version of Killer7 dropped out of nowhere! This game originally launched on the Nintendo GameCube in 2005, but it’s become something of a cult classic thanks to Grasshopper Manufacture and its visionary director, Suda51. Over the years, I’ve mostly played it on PC since that’s where it’s been accessible. It had been quite some time since any updates were released – the last one was back in January 2019! So, this unexpected patch caught us all off guard as many thought Killer7 was already a fully polished PC title.

The disappointing update for Killer7 appears to have affected the game negatively, as evidenced by the influx of negative reviews on Steam. The main concern seems to be about the AI-upscaled textures that were introduced, which many gamers find problematic. These changes in textures were intended to enhance the game’s performance and make the cutscenes resemble those seen on the GameCube. However, if player feedback is any indication, it appears that Grasshopper and publisher NIS America may have missed their target with these changes.

Looking ahead, there’s uncertainty about whether more changes will be made to the game Killer7. Recently, players have been encountering issues with the game. It’s possible that a fix, aimed at addressing some of these concerns, could be rolled out soon. However, even if an update doesn’t come, you may want to consider purchasing Killer7 right now as it’s currently discounted to $4.99 in a sale that ends on November 8th.

Should your curiosity be piqued, you’ll find a detailed summary of the latest changes to ‘Killer7’ down below.
